Question about Sony Audio Players & Recorders

1 Answer

I have a STR-DA3ES receiver and it is showing "protector please power off" in the display. I have powered off and disconnected each speaker, one at a time, and it still occurs.

Disconnect all the speakers at once just to be sure the problem is internal.

Is it overheating?

I disconnected all speakers and the "protector" message came on within three minutes. The unit does not seem to be overheating

If it took three minutes I'm betting heat is an issue at some component level if not overall. You could search in vain for the exact cause and replace a given suspicious component or you could let a hands-on guy troubleshoot it and hold him responsible for as result.

Make sure there are o clogged ventilation holes or dust bunnies living inside it.

Great testimony for those Monster surge protectors, huh?

Did the failure coincide with the storms? If so, stick a fork in it, it's done.

Just the same, if you really want an assessment as to damage and cost you need to have someone knowledgeable give it the sniff test in person.

No one out here can do that.

My SONY STR-DE835 receiver amplifier is showing PROTECTOR on the digital readout.Anybody know what that means.

These models are known for this issue.
I've had my share in the shop here.
Disconnect all speakers, turn speakers off, try headphones only
If it still persists then there is either :
1. power supply capacitors gone bad or 2. The thermal fuse in the transformer is open.
A tech can very easily find out if the thermal fuse is open by checking the primary of the transformer
if the plastic is shrinking away from the power supply capacitors then they've gone bad

Message "PROTECTOR"

Disconnect all speakers at the receiver and power it back on. If it stays on, check all speaker wires and speakers for shorts. If it cuts out, it needs service. If you need detailed troubleshooting help on this after testing receiver without speakers connected and it passes, post a comment and I can walk you thru it. Hope this helps.

MySony str-da5000es is showing error code 11 and shut off by itself after few seconds.check and disconnect all speakers, unplugged power from wall and still showing error 11. am missing something in here...

error code 11 (protector) - According to the manual, 11/PROTECTOR means, "Irregular current is output from the speakers. Turn of the receiver, check the speaker connection and turn on the power again." Most likely, a strand of speaker wire is shorted to the chassis at one of the speaker terminals.
Hope this helps !

Error code - protector

Try disconnecting all the speakers from the back and turn the unit back on. If the "protector" display goes away, turn the unit back off and reconnect one speaker. Turn it back on and check for "protector". Repeat.

If you find that one of the speakers causes "protector" to appear, you either have a bad speaker cable or bad speaker. Try swapping each of those out to see what happens.

Noise and popping on Sony STR-DA3ES

Sounds like its going to square wave clipping and poking a dc offset at your speakers. Happens when the amp reaches power supply ceilings. Pink noise such as "rain sound" will push the output stages and power supply to limits. If its on all channels, check power supply caps and check for dry solder joints. also look for that crappy brown hold down glue that goes conductive/corrosive. check all output stages particularly about discrete output devices that are attached to heat-sinks. They have a bad habit of dry jointing also. Good Luck

looked for a free manual on line for you
http://www.nodevice.com/manual/Sony/page139.html got heaps... but not your exact model. You may be able to cross reference one

Protector is flashing with the words under it saying"please power off" about 5 secs after I turn on my receiver

this happened to me.  one of the speaker wires had become unplugged and was touching another one... causing a short.  glad to know this unit is "smart" enought not to fry itself.
