Question about Samsung PS42B430 42 in. Plasma TV

1 Answer

When switched on, the power light flashes on and off on the front of the TV but no picture. We have the back part of the panel off and there are no puffed capacitors. Everything looks good except some goop around some of the capacitors. Is it normal to have goop that looks like its flowing out of the caps? Is it a glue that helps it seat better? I have access to a multi-meter and have the checked the output of some of the connectors. Anything to suggest?

It is not normal to have goo coming from the cap. Usually a cap will pop and you'll have the top or bottom puff out. Sometimes a cap will explode and you'll have a little more of a mess. So if it looks like goo is coming out if it then that is probably the case. Also compare it to other components on other boards. Sometimes a paste is used to connect components. Do you see this same stuff on other caps or other components? The paste is usually grayish in color.

I wish I could post pictures. You can tell in some places that it is glue. But in other places, it's like a yellowish white color. It's on a couple of coils and what looks like a cap. It's not on all components. Anything I can look at to see if a component has failed. Voltages or Ohm readings?

The side of the cap will have a voltage rating. Say, maybe 15V. They also have a positive side and a negative side. The only way to test an individual component is test it under a "load". This is nearly impossible. You absolutely do not want to touch the board under this condition because of electrical shock. When power is taken away the voltage will slowly "leak". They do have a resistance but that may not be listed. You can measure the resistance from the soldered leads underneath. If it reads 0 (or .0x) then it is shorted out (although since it is still on the board you could be getting "junk" from the rest of the board).
Also look for fuses on the board. These won't be glass fuses but little guys that look like resistors. The printing on the board next to it will say F01, Fxx, etc. This should have a reading of 0.

Hello

There is something confusing the system control of your TV and it should me resetted. To reset it, just switch OFF your TV with its front panel power control switch, and after that, unplug the TV from the wall socket. Wait for about 5 minutes or so, and the plug it and switch It ON. If this does not work for the first time, give some more time to reset, say about an hour or so, and try. OK.

Power light flashes.

The dm board is located inside the vertical metal case on the left side when viewing the tv2.gif from the back side.

Have you tried disconnecting the front panel on the tv? There are 2 plugs that go into the board and sometimes there is a faulty switch on there which causes your problem.
