Question about Computers & Internet

I've a Toshiba M100, using it for the last 4 years and it has never let me down, but yesterday, something went wrong with the lcd backlight. The light goes off when the screen is perpendicular to the keyboard and flashes back only when the screen is toward the closing position. Kindly help me figure out the problem. Thanking you, Nikhil Nair

You would need to run a series of tests......
Like ......plugging the power cord to the laptop to see if the screen is brighter than it was before!!!....(If that happens then that means.... that your problem is windows vista itself)

If windows vista is not installed on your computer then it has to do with power saving opps..... and if that does not work ..... just buy a new lcd screen for your laptop.....

Why is my replaced lcd screen not lighting up?

1) Wrong LCD screen

2) Video Cable (LCD Cable) is not connected tightly.
Motherboard side, or LCD screen side; or both.

3) IF, a screen Inverter is used, the small cable from the Video Cable, that connects to the screen Inverter; is not connected, or has a loose connection to it. (screen Inverter)

4) An LCD screen, and a screen Inverter are a Matched unit.
If it's the wrong LCD screen......................?

5) IF, a screen Inverter is used; the diagnosis was wrong, and the LCD screen was replaced.
90 PERCENT of the time, the fault is a bad screen Inverter.

A) Laptop's LCD screen uses a CCFL, (Or more than one), for a Backlight; the laptop uses a screen Inverter.

Diagnostic flowchart leads from Graphics Chipset, to Video Cable, to screen Inverter, THEN, LCD screen.
Expensive LCD screen was replaced, instead of the actual part that needed replacing;
Video Cable: $9 to $22
Screen Inverter: $9 to $22

LCD screen: $60 to $245

B) Laptop's LCD screen uses LED backlighting, and does NOT use a screen Inverter:

Diagnostic flowchart is;
A) Video Cable;
A Video Cable should have it's connections PHYSICALLY checked.
You have to try to push the connectors in tighter.
Visual inspection alone will NOT do.

Making sure the Video Cable connections are tight, and this does not fix the problem, then the Video Cable needs to be removed; and every wire in the Video Cable checked for Continuity with a multimeter set to OHM's. (1K)

Not feasible, then take the Video Cable down to the nearest small computer shop; and have the resident tech check it for Continuity.
Should only be a few bucks.

Or just replace the Video Cable.
(Parts changing I know, but...........?)

Primer:
An LCD screen cannot produce light. It needs an additional light source.
A Backlight is the additional light source.

A Backlight can be a CCFL, (Or more than one), or a series of LED's.
(Light Emitting Diode)

A CCFL is a Cold Cathode Fluorescent Lamp. (Bulb)
Similar to Fluorescent lighting used in homes, and businesses; but on a MUCH smaller scale.

Average thickness is 2mm. That is a little large than 1/16th of an Inch.
Average thickness is almost as long, as the LCD screen is in height.

A screen Inverter is used to convert the power, (Electricity), from the laptop; for the LCD screen, and Backlight.

As previously stated, Backlighting that uses CCFL, uses a screen Inverter.
LED backlighting MAY, or MAY NOT use a screen Inverter.
When the LED backlight technology first came out, it seems some did use a screen Inverter.
It also seems as the technology advanced, LED backlighting does Not use a screen Inverter.

Toshiba m100 my hand trying to have a power LED and battery LED fan works but I can not display the image signal.

Hi,

If you see power lights but nothing appears on the screen, it could be a "POST" (Power-on Self Test) problem or simply LCD problem.

Here are some steps that you can try.

1. Remove the battery and the ac adapter then press the power button for at least 20 seconds to drain electric charges left from the system. (You may need to repeat this step to get it work.)

2. If above step doesn't work, try to plug in an external monitor and see if you get display from the external monitor. You may need to press the Fn + F10 or F6, depends on the key designed on the keyboard to toggle between displays.

3. If you get display from the external monitor, I'm sure your having problem with the LCD components. In this case, check and replace faulty LCD backlight, LCD cable or LCD inverter. The LCD inverter is often a culprit.

4. Try to reinsert the memory module/s (RAM) of the unit, try using one RAM at a time to see if it works. A faulty RAM will cause the issue not to POST.

5. If reinserting the RAM doesn't help, most likely your motherboard needs to be replaced.

Hope this helps.

3 year old 42in LG LCD TV scrren went blank

You will either have a fault with the inverter board which drives the backlights or a faulty backlight in the screen. If the problem is a backlight then a replacement screen is the only cure. One or the other is breaking down after it has been opn for a certain period of time, have an engineer call out & check with a tester if it is a screen problem.

LCD backlight not working

Hi.....It would appear your backlight has "blown" (it is just a thin, long bulb in the bottom of your screen)....It will need replacing ....Although you could purchase one yourself to fit it would be best to leave this job to a service engineer

Hope this helps

Monitor Went "BLIND"!

Hi,
Actually, there's 3 major manufacturers of laptops and parts.
Can you connect to an external monitor and boot the unit up. You may have to toggle (F3 or F5 i think) between on board and external a few times. If you get an image on the external, it's probly the lcd inverter (#1), or the backlight (#2), or the cable is not completely connected to the lcd (#3)
Let me know how the external monitor test works and we'll narrow it down from there.
Good luck

LCD Screen has has no light to it anymore

The backlight to the LCD in your camera went out. You're going to have to get it replaced. Find a local repair shop that handles these cameras and get an estimate. There's probably nothing wrong in the camera, it just needs a little lamp swapped. Good luck
