Is the intake on top or bottom of a B&S 31C707 0175E1?

Intake is on the top....I assume you mean which valve is closest to the top of the engine? Intake valve upper.....exhaust valve lower....on your model.

I bought a used 2001 Yamaha big bear 400 the bike had set up for a while with gas in the oil from a stuck float in the carb. I rebuilt the carb changed the oil and adjusted the valves. Checked the timing...

It seems the float level is not correct in the carburator float chamber, recheck and reset and also recheck the valve clearance and check the spark pulg gaps and also reset the air fuel mixture ratio.
when all done..run the engine to its normal temperature and than adjust the air fuel mixture screw...take it in slowly to the end taking care not to tight it toomuch to avoid damaging the tip of the screw and than go anti clock wise two and half turns to three....you will feel the engine running smoothly plus it or minus the air fuel mixture screw at this point to suit it.
Hope this helps!

The carb needle valve may have trash in it. it's stuck open. The float may be pierced and no longer floating to shut the gas flow off when the carb is full of gas. Take the bowl off nad look fer problems.

Engine does not run smoothly. changed spark plug, cleaned air filter, even changed flywheel key but still does not start sometimes. when it does it runs emitting black smoke from the muffler. i have tried...

Black smoke as you know = too much fuel. This is usually caused by something stuck in the float needle seat and fuel constantly runs into the engine vs having a regulated fuel level in the carb. Pass me the ENGINE model number and TYPE. Then we will solve the mystery without too much trouble. I will pass you manuals so that you can repair the problem. I can only get you the correct manuals IF you pass the ENGINE Model and TYPE codes. I have been repairing small engines since the late 1960's so we will get this corrected ASAP.

Quantum pressure washer-- gas keeps running into carb and leaking out air filter when engine is off??

Carb float is faulty (probably has a float in it ... allowing it to 'sink') allowing gas to do exactly as you describe.

Have your carb rebuilt to rectify this problem.

I have a sears lawnmower that was flooded recently. I bought a tune up kit and installed it. I changed the gas and oil also. when I poured in the gas it all came out the air filter. What should I check...

carburator float is stuck in the open position allowing fuel to continiously run / drain out the fuel tank into the carb and then overflow into the venturi of the carb into the engine and out the air filter. Bottom line the carb needs to be disassembled cleaned and rebuilt

Hi..my name is Keith...and the engine is running too lean..and with you choking it..it richens the mixture..so its a carb problem..and that could be several things..1)..is the main metering jet needle on the bottom of the float bowl needs to be turn out until the engine runs smooth..or 2) the carb to engine gasket is bad and its sucking air..or 3)..the passage ways in the carb is stopped up..i hope one of these will help..if not please write me back

Rebuilt carb which was setting idle for years, now the engine runs for 4-5 minutes and then floods thru valve cover vent tube. 5.5 hp b&s tiller

I would recheck the float to be sure it is move smoothly and easily in the bowl. if it doesn't, it can allow fuel to overfill the bowl and cause the problem you are having. After that the needle and seat are the next thing to check. hope this helps.

it sounds like the float on your carb needs cleaning,im not sure how you cleaned your carb, but if you take out the bottom bowl ,it unscrews and youll see the float right there, check to see that it lifts up and down with no resistance,if ok I would check the safety switch on your seat, the one that shuts your tractor off if you get up off the tractor while its running, its probally on the way out,if this is helpfull please vote me a fix ya
