Hi, ok this can be a problem with the line lading to the machine, or fungus build up inside it..
firstly we check the lines leading to the machine.

  1. get access to the back of the unit
  2. turn the valve to shut of the supply of water leading to the unit
  3. disconnect the hose and place in bucket, turn on valve and let some flow in the bucket.
  4. if the water in the bucket is the same as the one in the unit then the problem is in the source not the unit, you can try flushing the lines or you many need to change them. (to flush just let the water flow in the bucket)
  5. if the water is fine, look into the connector where the hose connects in the unit ? does it smell funny ?.. insert a piece stiff wire (how hold electrical wire will work) inside and use a back and forth motion to pull any contents inside there out or loosen it up. replace filter if necessary
  6. connect back the hose to the unit
  7. press the water lever on the unit and let the water flow out for about 5 or more minutes , it should flush out. if not then chances are the lines inside needs to be removed / cleaned or replaces. This has to be done by a repair man.

was the outside filter factory? by this I mean does the unit have an internal filter ? if no, then you need to flush the system, clean the outside dispenser components, lime or rust has accumulated on the dispenser if the water from the outgoing side of the filter is clear ( is the ice clear and fed by this same water source? if so,, its just outside build up that needs to be cleaned

The bleach idea sounds the best. How did you get the bleach into the system? It would have to be under pressure from the water inlet to the connection on the refrig, running the water dispenser for several minutes until you could smell the bleach from the dispensed water, plus the icemaker would need to be cycled, and then left for at least 15 minutes to an hour, then flushed with clear water. (again, several, as in about 10, minutes for this step) (icemaker line also needs to be flushed with clear water) Best to be done with the filter bypass plug in place, then when done, a new filter. It is not really possible to replace all the water lines, as the one inside the freezer door cannot be replaced without replacing the entire door.

Moldy taste from water/ice for GE profile

What kind of external filter did you use ? If you used an $11.00 cut the line and attach on each end of the tube filter , this will not work . Go to home depot and invest in the $50.00 filter which mounts to the wall , where you replace the inner certridge by untwisting with your hand . This filter has replaceable charcoal , calcium , lime ,etc cartridges . You may have to try different cartridges to find the one your happy with .

Moldy taste from Whirlpool side by side

The problem can still be in your lines, or in the dispenser itself. If you run hot water with a little bit of vinegar in the lines and let it sit for about 30 minutes and then flush the whole system this should take care of your problem

Smelly water from door dispensor

I had the same problem. Drove me crazy and cost me about 5 filters at $50 a pop until I found the solultion. Water in the Sears/LG refrigerator that I have (french door trio) goes through the filter then into a container on the left front door of the refrigerator. That container stores the water so it can get cold and it also equalizes the flows in the system so that when you put your glass under the spigot the flow is steady and the water is cold. Problem is .... this tank can build up with algae/slime/foul tasting stuff. Since it is after the filter, no matter how many times you change the filter it will have no impact on the water in this container. That is why if you use the water spigot a lot, the water seems to get a little better (as the tank water gets diluted) but as soon as you don't use it for several hours or more, back comes the smelly water again. Solution for me was to remove the plastic panel on the inside of the left front door and clean the plastic bottle. It is pretty easy to remove with 2 screws and easy to pull off the hoses. I filled is with a little clorox and water and swished it around for several minutes then drained and rinsed it. Then I filled it again with a little clorox (like an ounce or two max) and put the container back into the fridge. Once in the fridge, I ran fridge water through the front water dispenser for about a gallon or so. This flushed out the chlorine in the plastic container as well as the lines between the container and the spigot. After about a half hour of work, my great tasting water in the fridge is back again. I've checked the taste on this water for several weeks now and no plastic/odor/bad tasting water any more. Hope this helps.
