Very easy

im in the proccess of doing one right now

if the screen is cracked it needs replacing, otherwie you might just need to re seat the cables

Simple google the name of your laptop (find the exact model on the back of the machine)
Buy you screen, i just paid £88.70 for a screen which arrived today, that was with VAT and delivery

Simply

Use a flat head scredriver or a knive to pry the front bezel off the laptop screen
This will reveal some screws, take these out and rest the screen on the keyboard, put some kitchen roll or other on the keyboard to rest the screen so it doesnt get damaged

There will be 2 cables, a power cable and a ribbon cable, detach both of these

Simply fit your new screen, attach the 2 cables, re fit the screws and the front bezel

I am charging the lady £45 to fit her screen
So if you can do it yourself youll make a nice saving
If your not comfortable then find a local PC repair service

Goodluck

Love my computer, but my monitor is fading on the left side facing me and getting vertical lines on it. I think I am about to lose the monitor. Is it possible to add a monitor to it? How?

You can add a monitor connecting it to VGA output, similar to that of any desktop computer. Some laptops have HDMI outlet.too.
You can replace ba bad monitos though they are quite expensive. Recently a friend replace a screen for his HP for about 100 USD! though maybe you can get a cheaper one.
Just FYI, if you get same screen problem with an exterrnal monitor, your problem is the videocard.

Just to have an idea how a screen is replaces, watch these videos:

Black screen on acer laptop

Black screen is a number of things.
*If you`re laptop turns on but you see no display at all..does`nt even post,Then its the GPU on you`re motherboard thats faulty & will need replacing. Or
*Its you`re screen inverter which is a small circuit board located inside on the bottom of you`re LCD screen which needs replacing.Theyre cheap and not expensive.
*Do a test for example : Connect you`re laptop to a PC monitor Via VGA to VGA cable.Connect to youre laptops PC input to your monitor PC input,Then turn you`re laptop on.If it displays on you`re monitor then its the problem with your LCD laptop screen,Or the inverter needs replacing.
If theres no display on the pc monitor then its You`re motherboard onboard GPU (graphic Card) - Which you will need to replace the motherboard.

Acer monitor is used as secondary monitor, running off laptop. video card replaced in laptop, now acer monitor comes on, but blinks on/off. Any suggestions ??

It acts like it is not getting the signal from the laptop video port, you should try it with another monitor also, and by the way, did you use the Fn key and either F5, 6, or 7 (depend on the laptop brand and model) to select Internal, External, or both monitors?

Blue vertical line in the middle of my laptop monitor?

Anytime you get lines inside of a laptop monitor, its a problem with the screen itself. You can verify this by hooking up an external monitor to the laptop and switch the output to it and you won't have lines on the external monitor. Get the laptop screen replaced.

Your laptop's monitor went bad and needs to be replaced. I had the same problem on an IBM laptop I had. Replacing the monitor costs between $120-220.

I want to use my laptop as a monitor for my desktop

Check VGA cord connection, possibly try another, shorter VGA cord, plugging in cords BEFORE booting up computer, with monitor power on also. No signal is just computer telling you that it is not connecting.
You may have to go into Setup when computer boots up and turn on or select external monitor as some laptops may require this. Good Luck!

Gateway flat LCD dead

I'm not sure if your referring to the lcd monitor (gateway brand) or a laptop's lcd screen not working anymore.

1. if it's an lcd monitor...
a. test monitor in a different pc before assuming the problem is the lcd screen
b. replace the monitor if after testing monitor is in deed the item failing.

2. if it's the lcd screen from your gateway laptop.
a. you may be able to attach a regular analog monitor to the paralel port on your gateway.. test and see if the monitor that you attach will give you a picture (you may have to toggle with some some keys on your laptop keyboard to make have the signal going to the "externa" or attached monitor.
if the other monitor does not work either.. you video controller on your motherboard on your laptop may be failing and you may not have other options that to replace your laptop.
b. if the external/attached monitor works.. very likely the problem is the lcd screen for that you need to get a replacement and you may have to contact gateway to find out about pricing (or places to send your laptop for service if you're still within warranty). if you have an old laptop you may have to considere simply replacing the unit as buying a new lcd screen may very likely be more expensive than the same working laptop.
