your synaptics software isn`t working.goto start - run type msconfig.goto services & enable it.do the same on start up & restart your comp.
if it doesn`t work then use the driver cd that came with the laptop

There is a small ribbon cable that connects the touchpad to the motherboard. If there was any dramatic jostling of the system or it was disassembled for any reason it may have come undone. I have heard of this happening in the past.
If your lucky, someone just turned it off. The toggle for the mouse pad is Fn+F7 simultaneously.
