Hi Mike, I take it you have just tried to go for a ram upgrade and now you have nothing showing on your computer screen. Do you still have the old ram in your system? I'm thinking you can perhaps remove the ram upgrade and see if this has any effect in getting your system back up and running. It could be a faulty ram module. What was your ram before the upgrade, 512, 1GB, 2GB? Another thing to consider before touching the inside of your pc make sure you ground yourself and you can do this by touching the outside metal port at the rear of your pc and this will then release any static discharge from your fingers.

Here's a website for you to check also and this is where I purchase my memory from and it has this free scanning tool that scans your system and it tells you how much ram you have in your system and the maximum amount of ram that you can install in your system.

As things stand, I would remove the ram upgrade and stick with the ram that you had before the upgrade and then check out the crucial website and carry out that scan. I hope this information is of some use to you and good luck. Andrew

My laptop will show light on the board but not displaying on the screen. It went off while trying to upgrade the ram size.

Isolate the problem by putting the old ram back in and see if it works like it did before you upgraded the ram. if it does, you know you've got an issue with the ram.

If it does not work with the original ram, then either your lcd screen or the video card might have issues.

Can the motherboard of this computer be upgraded? if so, what motherboards will fit in the case/are compatible? (xp)

The D610 is the improved model of the D600. The motherboard cannot be upgraded but it is possible to upgrade the RAM and processor.
However, aside from a ram upgrade and maybe a hard drive upgrade, I'd look at replacing the system as very quickly you lose cost effectiveness especially when a Inspiron 15 starts at $449 this week.

    Ram upgradation

According to the specifications on the HP website the maximum RAM for your HP is 512MB and you are correct it only has one DIMM slot. So you're only alternative would be to buy a 1GB stick and insert it and try. It will not do any harm, but, you may lose some money because it will only operate at the spec given.
