Question about Office Equipment & Supplies

1 Answer

My C4380 printer was scanning perfectly. Suddenly only half a scan was on the screen and it locked up. I ended the Task and started again. Didn't work. Closed down printer and computer and restarted. Still won't work. It says something else is using HP imaging, but I have closed everything, plus doing the alignment scanner bit. What can I do?

Paper Jam whilst doing a multi page scan

The rollers that pull the paper through could need a cleaning. With general usage these parts do get worn down. By having your printer cleaned by certified technician it would resolve this problem.

I push the scan button and it wont scan

There are several reasons why this may occur. The causes for this problem fall into four categories:
  • A system configuration problem.
  • The task that monitors the SCAN button is not running.
  • A cable problem.
  • A hardware/software conflict. NOTE: The SCAN button on the front panel is not functional when the unit is installed in the Windows 2000 operating system. The Windows 2000 drivers do not provide this functionality. Initiate any scans from the HP scan viewer software, or from within a TWAIN-capable application.
  • The computer might not be configured to work well with the HP Officejet software. Follow these instructions to resolve this issue:
    1. The power management features for the hard drive must be disabled. Click Start , Settings , and Control Panel . Double-click Power Management . Set Turn of hard disks to Never , and click OK .
    2. Turn off Windows Active Desktop. Right-click an empty space on Windows Desktop. Place the cursor on the Active Desktop menu item to reveal the sidebar menu. If Display As Web Page has a check beside it, click Display As Web Page to clear that selection and turn off Windows Active Desktop.
  • The software that checks that the Scan button is pressed may not be running. Follow these instructions to resolve this issue:
    1. To see if it is running, press CRTL + ALT + DELETE at the same time to bring up the Close Program dialog box.
    2. Look through the list of programs, and see if HPMDLBWA (HP Officejet R Series) or HPODLB08 (PSC 500) is listed as a running program. This task checks if the Scan button is depressed and must be running for the button to work. If it is present, go to Step 3.
    3. Click Cancel , Start , Programs , and Startup . See if HPMDLBWA (or HPODLB08 for a PSC 500) is listed in the Startup group. If it is listed, and it was not running when checked, restart the computer, and check it again.
    4. If HPMDLBWA (or HPODLB08 for a PSC 500) is not listed under Startup , uninstall the software by clicking Start , Settings , Control Panel , and Add/Remove Programs . Highlight the HP software, and click Remove . Restart the computer, then reinstall the software.
  • The printer cable may be loose, bad or not IEEE-1284 compliant. Follow these instructions to resolve this issue:
    1. Check the printer parallel port cable to see if it is IEEE-1284 compliant. It may not be a bidirectional compliant cable if this marking does not appear.
    2. Double-click the product Toolbox , and click the Services tab.
    3. Click Test Product Communication , and Test . If the communication test does not pass or does not indicate that Two Way Communication is Working Properly , there might be a cable problem or a hardware or software conflict. Loosen both ends of the cable, and resecure them. Perform the communication test again. If it fails again, try a different cable if available.
  • There may be a software or hardware conflict. Follow these instructions to resolve this issue:
    1. If a printer with a status monitor, a scanner, a multifunction device, or another parallel port device such as an external drive or a switch box is previously installed, these devices and all associated software should be removed. Consult the product vendor for assistance with this. Try pressing the SCAN button as each device is removed to see if the problem is eliminated.
    2. Click Start , Programs , HP Officejet R-Series , and HP Precisionscan , or click Start , Programs , HP PSC 500 , and HP PSC Scanning for the PSC 500. The scanning software should load. If the software loads successfully, the problem is most likely a software conflict.
    3. Close all running applications.
    4. Press CTRL + ALT + DELETE to bring up the Close Program dialog box. In Windows NT, select Task Manager .
    5. Explorer, Systray and HPMDLBIA (or HPODLB08 for a PSC 500) are the only tasks that are to be left running. Highlight one of the remaining tasks, and click End Task . The Close Program window will close so it will be necessary to repeat Steps 3 and 4 several times to come to the desired files. In Windows NT, End Process on everything that is allowed by Windows NT, except for the HP process.
    6. Press the SCAN button, and see if the software loads. If it loads, one of the tasks running in the background is causing a conflict.
    7. Restart the computer, and End Task one task at a time, pressing the SCAN button after each task is ended to determine which task is causing the problem.

Computer has viruses which might be why it has a the blue screen

Try entering safe mode and doing the virus scan:
  • Switch on your PC
  • Before the Windows Logo screen appears press F8 to get the startup options menu
  • Chose Safe Mode
  • Once your computer boots, run AVG and let it remove all the viruses. Reboot and it should go into Windows as normal. You might have to rerun the scan a few times to get rid of everything but it should do the job.

Try scanning without HP imaging software

HP Photosmart C4380 Direct Scan button doesnt function in VISTA
Use the built-in feature of the Windows operating system, called Windows Image Acquisition (WIA), instead of the HP software to scan. Follow these steps to perform a WIA scan.

  2. Click Start , and then click Control Panel .
  3. Click Printers and Other hardware , and then click Scanners and Cameras .
  4. Look for an icon representing the product, and then review the following information for further instructions:
  5. Double-click the icon to start the Scanner and Camera Wizard . Follow the on-screen instructions to scan images or documents to the computer
  6. If the WIA scan was successful , use the Scanner and Camera Wizard to scan instead of the HP software. To use the HP software, continue to the next step to continue troubleshooting. However, it is not necessary to do so.
  7. If the WIA scan was unsuccessful , continue to the next solution.
  8. Fully uninstall and reinstall the HP software Follow these steps to completely uninstall and then reinstall the HP software. Method one: Uninstall the software using the product CD If the product software CD is available, follow these steps to uninstall the software. Otherwise, skip to the next method.
    1. Insert the software CD into the CD-ROM drive on the computer.
    2. If the Welcome installation screen appears, click Exit to close it.

    4. Click Browse . The Browse window appears.
    5. Navigate to the CD-ROM drive that the software CD is in, and then double-click the drive.
    6. From the list of folders and files on the CD, double-click the Util folder.
    7. From the list of folders and files inside the Util folder, double-click the CCC folder.
    8. From the list of folders and files inside the CCC folder, double-click the Uninstall_L3.bat file or Uninstall_L3_64.bat if a 64-bit operating system is installed on the computer. The Browse dialog box closes, and the path to the Uninstall _L3.bat file appears in the Run dialog box. Figure 5: Uninstall file path in the Run dialog box c01463552.gif
    9. Click OK . The software uninstaller opens in a command prompt window.
    10. Press Enter to begin the uninstall.

    1. Click here to go to the Software & Driver download page on the HP Web site .
    2. Type the product number in the search field, and then click Submit (c01425574.gif ).
    3. If necessary, click the link for the product model number.
    4. Click the correct operating system.

    6. When the File Download - Security Warning dialog box appears, click Save .
    7. Save the file in a location that is easy to remember.
    8. When the file finishes downloading, double-click the file to extract it.

Can my HP Photosmart C4380 support Microsoft Office Professional 2007 Fax and Scan? Or must the HP fax and scan only be used?

Sorry, Fax and Scan is part of Windows Vista not MS Office. I have been advised by PC World team that this printer (HP Photosmart C4380) does not have the necessary drivers to support Vista Fax and Scan wirelessly and can only operate with the HP Fax and Scan which is very basic and only seems to function via USB cable, not wirelessly. Update drivers may become available.

Trying to instal photosmart C4380 all in one wirelessly on toshiba L40-17M from supplied disc installed printer ok first time but scanner not recognised, scan button says computer connected but computer...

Photosmart C4380: good hardware, appalling software. Shameful that it's on the market at all.

WIRELESS PROBLEM

You have to install the printer as USB first. Then, once it's all installed, load up the CD again and 'Add device', choosing the wireless option. It's crucial that you leave your USB cable in the whole time. Take it out right at the end. Once you've added a device, you'll have two printers installed. One will be called 'Copy 1' - that's the wireless one. It should all work okay, and you can delete the USB one.

SCAN PROBLEM AND ERROR MESSAGES

When I did this everything seemed to work fine. BUT - after a wee while the software started playing up. The scan function didn't work at all, HP was depositing all sorts of bugs all over my computer, I had error messages coming up at shutdown, all sorts of gremlins.

So this is what I did.

I totally uninstalled all HP software.

I downloaded the updated Photosmart Basic Drivers from the HP website. They are here: http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/softwareCategory?product=3221646&lc=en&cc=us&dlc=en&submit.y=11&submit.x=9&lang=en&cc=us

Once you've downloaded the file and run it, the new drivers will be installed but NO SOFTWARE. Again, you have to do the whole setting it up as USB and then leaving the cable in and adding the device wirelessly. But if you do this with the HP drivers and ignore the installation CD, then everything should work perfectly.

Of course this means no HP software at all. But who needs it? I use Microsoft's scanning software, which is fine, and it has no problem printing.

Basically HP's software is BLOATWARE that doesn't even work. It screws up your computer.

Good luck!!
