My Acer 5720 all of a sudden shut down (power out). Everything else plugged in the house works fine. I hit the on/off button and all I got was a cursor at the top left corner of the screen. I waited a while got myself a drink. I hit the on/ff button again and it started up no problem

Seems that the power outage had reset the PC because there was not back up and so a restart solved the issue as the OS had hung up.
make sure that the back up is good at such times so that hard disc is protected.

Possibly an overheat problem. If you use the laptop on your legs, table cloth, sofa, carpet etc. it can block the air vents in the bottom of the laptop causing it to get hot. If it has never done this before, it could be an indication that there is fluff, hair (cat or dog) or other assorted lint blocking the internal air passages thru the processor heatsink or other parts. This is caused by using the laptop on fabric surfaces (especially floors) - it sucks - up lint and over time it accumulates causing overheat problems. This is easily cured by firing pressurized air into the vents (can of air or from a compressor), in short bursts, to dislodge the dust, then use a household vac to clear the vents.
This should prevent this problem.

This model has mother board problems. In addition to sudden auto switch off, it also has problems in starting the system. what Acer workshop can do for you is to change a new mother board. After changing mother board, the problem comes back after some time. So my advice is change a new PC. of course not Acer again.

Turns off shortly after turning on

Is this when connected to power source or on battery?

If it is on battery the battery may need to have its memory refreshed.

Turn the 5720 off, remove the battery, hold the on/off button down for 15 seconds and when done put it back together and turn it on.

Good Luck

Unclear here? When you take the battery out, it shuts off? Assuming you do have the power supply plugged in? (sorry, I know it sounds silly that I ask that, but you just never know)

Acers will work with the battery out, actually that is how I HAD to work my acer. I personally would not buy another ACER because of the problems I have had with mine. I had to remove my battery as the keyboard and mouse would NOT function with the battery in place. (the battery never held long charge from new anyway). So I started using it plugged in all the time. (no battery).

As far as the hitting the wireless button and the computer shuts down, I'm wondering if just moving the laptop period is what is causing the shutdown. My Acer too, (because of jiggly PS jack on the back) would cut off is laptop is even slightly moved. Maybe while pushing the button the laptop too gets moved? Unsure. It may be a shortage issue, but I suspect it has more to do with shorted PS jack.

Hope this helps at least some. Good luck!

Cant shut down

keep start button pressed 30 seconds, the pc should turn off. If not brutally unplug the power cable. Do a scan disk on restart.
