Question about Gateway CX2610 Notebook

1 Answer

I have a gateway cx 2610. i got a virus and changed the harddrive. i reinstalled the operating system from the system recovery disc that came with the computer. but now, basic windows functions are missing from the computer - for example, i cannot hibernate the computer, or use an external display. (the video looks messed up too - it looks the way video looks in the system recovery application.) i know the problem is not the system recovery disc, as I have used it before (with my old hard drive) and it works fine.

thanks for your response - i will check the device manager for the monitor. btw, you inspired me to answer someone else's question.
i didn't quite understand your comment about hibernate. the menu in control panel which normally allows you to enable hibernation is missing. moreover, hibernation is not the only thing missing - so is standby. perhaps some kind of power management driver is missing? or could the virus have screwed up my bios?

Check in device manager to make sure all drivers are installed. Sounds like you need the graphics driver installed or updated.

You will find settings for hibernation in the control panel power settings

The bios is fine unless you somehow cleared cmos which would reset it back to factory. It won't hurt to go into the bios and check if it has power settings/ acpi. You may also make sure the MB chipset is installed, and look for any driver or support software for acpi. ( don't forget to check hidden devices in device manager under "views"

Boot cd acer AX3400-B3802

What operating system is on this machine ?
What do yo see after booting up ?
1. If it is not booting up and you do not see the selftest screens and it gives a number of beeps then shuts down: count the number of beeps, that can tell you what is wrong.
2.If it is finding a harddrive but then gives a black screen which says something like "operating system not found, insert disk" or "grub error, run grub recovery" then you might need a cd or usb drive to boot from.

You might try Acer's e-recovery if you had that on your computer:

Else look here for Win 7 answer:
http://www.tomshardware.co.uk/answers/id-1751047/copy-boot-disk-win.html
Note on the link to Microsoft the answer of Andre da Costa.
At a friends computer:
1. download the iso
2. burn a cd disk using the program Imgburn as Andre says.

Then run it on your computer:
NB. you might first need to change the boot order in the BIOS, press DEL or F10 (the right button is displayed during the selftest on screen somewhere) find BOOT ORDER or POWER UP ORDER in the BIOS and put CD drive in first position

Look here for what to do:
http://windows.microsoft.com/en-us/windows/what-are-system-recovery-options#what-are-system-recovery-options=windows-7
open the 3rd option:
To open the System Recovery Options menu using the Windows 7 installation disc or a USB flash drive, or a system repair disc.

If you have reinstalled the operating system and Microsoft Genuine Check gets bothering you: call Microsoft support and explain that you had to reinstall due to harddrive failure, you will be given a new key for your windows. I have done so several times after hardware failures and reinstalling, they always have given me a new key. But you will have to make clear it was due to hardware failure, f.i. new motherboard, harddrive failure.

Cant find operating system on my gateway

It was corrupted, either because the hard disk died or you got infected by a virus. Reinstall using the recovery cd that came with the pc when you bought it and if the problem returns it's the hard disk - replace it and reinstall one more time.

The hard drive crashed will not start

If the hard drive have crashed meaning that the hard drive itself is damaged, then your solution is to replace a new harddrive. If you do have a recovery disc already made, or one is provided then you will have to use that disc once the hard drive is replaced with the new one, and follow the procedure to reinstalled the operating system. If the original hard drive had crash and does no work anymore (where the bios/computer cannot detect it) and you have important data that you would like to retrive, there are places such as office depot, bestbuy, where they can help you send it to a recovery file center to recover files from your damaged hard drive. Do not attemp to fix or open a damaged harddrive, you can forever damage the files on the cyclinder disc. 2) Now if your harddrive crash in term as windows just crashing and you cannot get into your operating system and the bios is still able to detect the hard drive, and it's giving you a error message, then you will only need to reinstall, or do a windows recovery through your recovery disc, If you do not have a recovery or made the disc, then you will need to buy a new operating system software. If you computer does not start meaning no display on the screen at all, then please replay back. That is a different story.

You probably can go to Gateway web site and order a recovery disk that was sold with the system. It would be worth it to own one in case you have the same problem again and plan on keeping the computer.

Toshiba 5000 laptop

From the above it appears as if you attempted to reinstall the operating system using the recovery discs. Given this you should attemtp this again and make sure that you re-format your harddrive before installing the Operating System again. If you are installing xp again the following link will walk you through the steps.
Basically boot from the cd and re-install windows making sure to delete the existing partition step 5 is critical.

Reformating my gateway E 4100

reformatting a drive is a big undertaking, formating the drive will erase everything, including viruses, before you format you need to make sure you have all the discs including the windows disc, driver discs, and a factory restore disc, also you make check the documentation on your system because alot of the gaetway, dell, emachines systems have restore partitions installed on the drive. Also youll need alot of coffee and alot of time, most importantly aside from the windows disc youll need a driver disc for any ethernet or wireless card you have installed. without this you will not have access to the internet most likely and donloading updated drivers is very helpful. This is a time consuming proccess unless there is a restore partition on the harddrive, the documentation will tell you how toaccess it if it exists, if not a restore disc will be nice.
