when lights are wired in parallel the each wire to the light has to be in the same pin of the switch the other ends of the lights have like wise to be in the same pins or joined together
so at he switch you will have one power wire in a pin ( live power )
now you put each wire of the lights in the same pin that becomes alive when you turn the switch on
power flows out equally to each light circuit
at the other end , the wires are back in a common pin or return wire ( neutral)

Checking the Brake Light Switch: A control switch is used to connect the brake light electrical circuit. This switch is located near the brake pedal lever. Basic switches have just two wires, power in and power out to the turn signal switch. Use a test light that is grounded and with the key in the "on" position test for power at one side (wire) of the switch, then press the brake pedal while testing the opposite side (wire). It should illuminate the test light, if electrical power is connected through the switch go to the next step. If no power is detected through the switch the brake light switch has failed and replacement is required. If your car is equipped with more than two wires integrated into the brake light switch a car repair manual is needed to locate the proper brake light circuit wiring.

How do I fix two three way switches where only one of them controls the light?

the upstairs switch is improperly wired. With the breaker off, un wire the upstairs switch. Using an inductive tester with the breaker back on (use caution not to get shocked, determine which wires get power from the downstairs switch in EACH position (there is no 'off' in a three way). when you determine which two wires bring power to the upstairs switch, the remaining wire is the light.

I have power in 14/2 and 14/2 out to light. how do I wire the switch. I tried putting whites together and blacks to switch but it doesn't work.


Your breaker is not tripped.
Your light bulb is working.
You have a working on-off switch that has two brass screws and a green ground screw.
That is a single pole switch. Black wires go on either brass-colored screw, and whites are twisted together.
If switch has 3 screws and ground screw, connect black wires to dark-screw and one of the brass screws.

First you should test your wires.
You have 2 cables.
Both cables have black, white, and bare copper ground wires.
One cable goes to light.
Other cable comes from breaker box.

Cable from breaker box has black-hot wire and white-neutral wire.
Turn on power and test black wire to white, and then test black wire to ground.
Tester should light up with both tests.
If tester does not light up, then breaker is suspect, or there is a short in nearby box.
Track back the short towards breaker, going one box at a time, each time testing black to white and black to ground.

Next, inside the switch box, remove the switch and connect both cables without the switch.
Black to black
White to white
Turn on power, does light turn on.
If light turns on, your switch is suspect. Connect new switch. One black wire to each brass screw, and then tie white wires togethr.
If light does not turn on, your light is suspect. Open light fixture and test black to white and black to ground again.

If light tests with power, then check your bulb
If light has no power, then wire between switch box and light is suspect.

Trying to hook up a pilot light switch to a gfi recp not having much luck with getting it to work properly i got 2 conductors from the panel and 2 conductors going to the gfi recp and on the switch i have...


It is unclear what pilot-light-switch is supposed to turn on-and-off.

Option A) pilot-light-switch is going to turn GFCI on-and-off
Option B) pilot-light-switch is getting power from existing GFCI circuit, and switch controls another Load (light, fan or motor) located elsewhere.

Add a comment at any point.
Bare copper wire always connects to green screw.

1) I have a Cooper pilot-light-switch in my office.
Black Hot wire from breaker always connects to dark-colored screw(s).
White Neutral wire from breaker box connects to silver-colored screw
Wire going to Load (light, fan, motor) connects to brass colored screw.

2) Two things happen when pilot-light-switch turns ON:
a) Pilot light turns on. This circuit is powered by black Hot wire, and circuit is complete with white Neutral.
b) Brass screw that had no power, is now powered.

The GFCI:
Hot from breaker always connects to brass-colored Line screw
Neutral from breaker connects to silver-colored screw that is opposite Line screw.
If other switches and plugs are going to be protected by GFCI, they connect to brass Load screw and to silver screw that is opposite Load screw

Option A) You want pilot-light-switch to turn on GFCI receptacle.
a) Wire pilot-light-switch as described above
b) Black wire from GFCI line-screw connects to brass screw on pilot-light-switch.
c) White wire from GFCI silver-screw-opposite-line-screw connects to any white Neutral.

Option B) Pilot-light-switch is getting power from GFCI receptacle AND you want pilot light switch protected by GFCI.
a) Black wire on pilot-light dark screw connects to Load screw on GFCI
b) White wire on pilot-light silver connects to silver screw on GFCI that is opposite Load screw

Option C) same as option B except pilot-light-switch is NOT protected by GFCI.
a) Black wire on pilot-light dark screw connects to Line screw on GFCI or any Hot wire
b) White wire on pilot-light silver connects to silver screw on GFCI that is opposite Load screw or to any Neutral wire

If I understand correctly you have a 3-speed fan.
And you need a 3-speed replacement pull-chain-type switch

Lowes carries 3 speed fan switches in the light fixture department.
These switches have multiple wires.
At any given time, there is one-and-only-one wire that connects to power from wall switch.
Lets call this the Power wire.
As you pull the chain, the power passes through the switch and goes to one-and-only-one of the other wires.
The other wires connect to windings in the motor.
The different motor windings control fan speed.

The key to replacing the switch is recording where each wire went before you disconnect old switch.
Once you know which of these wires is the Power wire, then you can test other wires with a continuity tester.
You also know the pull-chain sequence is OFF - HIGH - Medium - Low
Mark wires in fan and mark wires on old switch.
Pull out old switch.
Use regular electrical tester to find which wire in the fan is the power wire (separate wires, turn on power and test each wire to metal part of fan)
Now test the switch wires.
The switch is out of the fan.
You marked the wires so you know which wire is power wire.
Put the continuity tester on the power wire.
Test power wire to each of the other wires.
Click the switch and test to each of the other wires. Mark which wire lights up continuity tester.
Click the switch and test again. Mark which wire lights up continuity tester.
Click again, until each wire is marked in the sequence.
When you click the switch and no wire lights up, then that is the Switch OFF position.
Do the same test on the new pull-chain switch.
Connect the wires to match your testing.

The first thing is to check for power at the brake light switch,there should be power to one wire the other wire power up when pedal is pushed, this will tell you if it a power loss if theres no power to switch, if theres power to switch and through switch with pedal pushed then loog at the connect for signal switch its near column big connector as brake light power goes through switch you may have fryed that wire have some watch lights as you wiggle but this is only if you have power at brake switch. if theres no power then double check fuses even in the engine compartment, mostlikly it a fuse the wiring should not of burnt with a fuse in line, theres fuses in engine fuse box that also control lights.

This is a single pole light switch and should be wired as any other SP switch. The only difference is that is has a pilot light. All the white neutral wires are tied together and then pushed back in the box with none connected to the switch. The grounds are tied together with a jumper wire connected to the green screw on the switch. That will leave you with 2 or more black wires. If you have just two normally you can connect them to the two screws on the switch and it does not matter which screws. However it may be that with the pilot light you need to connect the wire going to the light to the top screw and the power wire to the bottom or vice versa. Try both ways. If you have more than 2 black wires you need to connect the incoming power black wire and outgoing power black wires together and then jump to one of the screws on the switch. The black wire left over is the black wire going to the light itself. If none of this works then it is obvious the pilot light in the switch is burnt out.

It all depends on how the light on the pole is wired. The switch you have is meant to interrupt the power between the circuit breaker and the light, just like the switch does now. The new switch uses power to run itself, so you need an additional wire. Usually the lights on a pole have the power coming in on top, and a wire coming down for the switch - black and white. Lets say there was no switch - on top of the pole there would be a black wire going to the hot, or center contact on the pole light, and the white wire would go to the ground, or outside of the bulb. If (BIG IF) things are wired like they are supposed to be, there will be a black wire (hot) coming in from the breaker, down the pole, instead of going to the light. The switch you have in place now interrupts the power so you can turn it off/on. Then when you turn the switch on, power goes up the white wire to the hot, or bottom of the bulb. Theoretically, there should be another black wire going back up to power the light once it leaves the switch. People normally use regular wire, which has a black and a white inside a plastic casing. So, bottom line - you need to run a red wire from the light to the new switch, hook the white wire up to the ground. So: power coming in on top goes down pole to new switch to black. Red wire hooks up to pole light where it is now white, goes down pole to red on switch. Old white wire gets unhooked from light on top, and hooked to common (ground) on top.

Power mirrors don't work. Which fuse controls this


Here is repair information from Mitchells:
1) Disconnect power mirror switch connector. Connect test light between power mirror switch harness connector terminal "A" (orange wire) and ground. If test light illuminates, go to the next step. If test light does not illuminate, repair open in orange wire between power mirror switch and righ rear power distribution center fuse block No. 1 (located under left side of rear seat).
2) Connect test light between power mirror switch harness connector terminals "A" (orange wire) and "J" (Black wire). If test light illuminates, check for poor connections at the power mirror switch. If connections are okay, replace power mirror switch. If test light does not illuminate, repair open in Black wire between power mirror switch and ground.
