Question about Dryers

1 Answer

My dryer has a 3 pronged connector but the new house has a 4 pronged receptical. I took the old cord off and purchased an new 4 pronged cord. My problem is that the dryer has three connecting points for wires, not 4 that are on the new cord. Where does the green wire connect to? The dryer is a Maytag Neptune front loader.

I have a Frigidaire FAFS4473LW Steam Washer- 3 prong. I moved into a new place with a 4 prong. Do I need a 4 prong cord, or can I change the 4 prong adapter on the wall?

Hi nancy huerta...

You can change the cord or the receptical...
It will be easier to change the cord...
Purchase a four prong plug cord that will fit into your receptical, then wire your dryer for 4 wire instead of three wire use.
To see a picture and explanation of how to wire your dryer for a 4 wire plug go to the following webpage.

Have went through 2 dryers and its still tripping breaker. House is only two years old. Could it be the breaker anyway? I don't understand how it could still be the dryer. Both dryers had to have the new 4...

yes. The four prong cords have inherent problems with their electrical consumption. The same thing happened to my lawn mower with a four prong cord. Try reverting back to a 3 prong cord, then, if that doesn't work, you really might want to have an electrician look at the wiring. Some houses are cheaply made, and the wiring is usually the first sign. If you have a prefab home, this might just be the problem.
Hope this helps

4 power cord to a 3 power cord

You can take off the cord and put a three prong plug for the dryer it will come with 4 wire that connect to the dryer the one that is not coded is the ground wire. when you take off the one you have now it should have a ground connected to it. Or you can get a new receptical to match the one you have now but it would be more expensive. Hope this helped. If not let us know and thankyou for asking.

Yes, it does matter which color wires are connected. If connected wrong, you may injure yourself and/or destroy the dryer. The following link explains how to convert your dryer plug:

GE electric dyer cord

You must change the cord on the dryer. New house constuction electrical code requires a 4 prong receptical (double grounded).
You can buy a cord at Lowes, Home depo, Sears, etc. When you install the new cord there is a brass strap from the neutral post to the dryer cabinet that you must remove. The extra green wire in the cord connects to the cabinet. Your old cord probably won't be color coded, but the new one will be. Red is hot, goes on the end post, (doesn't matter whichn end). white is neutral and goes on the middle post. black is hot & goes on the other end post.& green goes to the cabinet.
