Question about Kenmore 22422 Top Load Washer

1 Answer

Kenmore top load will not spin

The washer will agitate but will not spin. It appears that the drum has dropped about an inch. It is not the coupling and the agitator dogs have been replaced.

Under the agitator and beyond the dogs is the lower half of the of the agitator, remove and you will see a spindle surround by a drive block fastened to the tub with a nut, check for metal shavings and wear.

Need manual for kenmore top load washer model 82891120. washer will agitate but not spin pump works to drain water.

the drive coupling or clutch is bad ! the coupling is between motor and the transmission. on a lot of washers its rubber or hard plastic to keep from ruining appliance if it breaks.this is why washer will not spin.

Won"t spin or agitate. Makes a loud rattling noise

If this is a Whirlpool manufactured TOP LOADER (such as Roper, Estate, Kenmore, Amana, and Frigidaire), you may have a damaged or broken motor coupling. Whirlpool manufactured top loading washers use a motor coupling between the drive motor and gearcase (transmission) in place of a drive belt. This configuration is known as "direct-drive". The coupling can break through normal wear and tear. Washing frequent loads of heavy items and reduce the life span of the coupler. Common symptoms include the following:

1. No spin or agitation.
2. Washer will fill and empty.
3. Drive motor still runs.
4. Strange rattling, grinding or clicking noise during agitation or spin cycles as the drum sits still.

If your washer is exhibiting these symptoms, then its probably a safe bet that the motor coupling is bad.

The following link explains how to replace one:

http://www.fixya.com/support/r3574231-replacing_a_motor_coupling

The part number for a replacement motor coupling is inlcuded in the link I provided. Replacements can be purchased at any of the following websites:

searspartsdirect.com
appliancepartspros.com
pcappliancerepair.com
repairclinic.com

All these sites are reputable and offer great service with competitive pricing, so shop and compare. The first three sites I have listed also included helpful exploded view parts illustrations to assist you with locating and properly identifying any parts you may need.

If you have any questions, please post back with your complete MODEL NUMBER (located on a nameplate along the wash tub rim under the lid) and let me know. I hope this helps you.

My washer makes a loud grinding noise when spin cycle is running. If I hold the agitator stationary while spin cycle is running drum will continue to spin and noise stops. I have already replaced the dog...

If dogs and coupling are replaced, then you will need to look at the transmisson, check the piece that holds drum on itself, this bearing can go bad. There is also a seal under the nut that holds on the air bell housing.
There is also a plastic hub that connects the agitator to the motor that can go worn.

Washer will not spin or agitate. Pump works.

This assumes that you have a basic Kenmore / Whirlpool top load, direct drive, neutral drain (it doesn't spin until the pump removes most of the water) machine.

First, see the Sears parts site for your washer:
http://www.searspartsdirect.com/partsdirect/index.action

Enter your model number (###.######) and you'll see a list of major sub-components with diagrams and parts.

First, see the following Whirlpool Kenmore installation and service manual for top load, direct drive washers.

https://secured.whirlpool.com/Service/SrvTechAdm.nsf/2cd44500d572193285256a45004fd9d6/f7e2147fa98b28cf85257122007475cb/$FILE/L-55.pdf

If it drains and you can hear the motor trying to turn the transmission for the agitate mode, the obvious first answer is the Motor coupler. I'd replace it just to be sure.

If it's not the Coupler, the problem points to the transmission itself.

There are only two components of the gearcase that are used for both agitating and spinning.

One is the Agitator shaft which drives the agitator and holds the spin pinion that drives the clutch for spinning.

The other is the main "Bottom and pinion gearcase" itself.

Please see the following Whirlpool parts list for commercial top load direct drive washers although the consumer models use the same transmission parts.

Very loud noise while spinning, almost like a drum banging and vibration

We had the same problem with an old Kenmore top load, direct drive, neutral drain washer.

Major gear sounding grinding during spin mode. Major vibration also.

After removing the cabinet, checking motor coupling (a bit worn but intact), drive block (you don't need a spanner wrench to remove it, a 12 - 14 inch pipe wrench works great) which was OK, clutch, seemed OK, we determined that the problems were in the transmission.

Two options, 1 spend $150 plus for a transmission.
2. Open it up and see if anything seemed seriously bad.

After looking at the transmission parts list (available on a number of sites) and on the Whirlpool site (Whirlpool makes Kenmore)

http://shared.whirlpoolcorp.com/assets/pdfs/literature/Repair%20Part%20List%20-%20W10114743.pdf

Te problem seemed to be related to the agitator cam and cam follower not raising the agitator gear high enough (probably less than a 1/16th of an inch) above the agitator cam.

Found the right part number (Whirlpool part # 62580 / 81) which includes both the cam and follower. Bought one for about $10.50,tore the transmission apart, installed it, put washer back together and problem was solved.

NOTE. Fixing the washer takes a little mechanical ability (wrenches, socket sets, screw drivers, vice grips, short pipe wrench) and a solid desire to save some money.
