Open Disk Utility in the /Applications/Utilites folder. Select the drive from the list on the left. Click the Erase tab on the right. Click Erase....
But make sure you select the Mac OS Extended (Journaled) format first.

Most likely the hard drive is formated as NTFS and you will need to download a 3rd party app in order to write to an NTFS file system in Mac OS X, such as Tuxera NTFS or NTFS For Mac OS X
