Question about Garden

Open Question

Removal of blade guide and self-propel pulley from Toro 21" OLD mower. Have tried liquid wrench, hammer, pry bar, and gear puller. About ready to use REAL BIG hammer. Got any ideas? Most of the exploded parts views show the pulley and blade guide as two separate pieces but I would swear this one is one piece. Maybe it was one piece back when it was produced early to mid 60's. Again, Got any ideas? Max

SOURCE: turn off mower blades the electric clutch spins and the two green

There should be a metal "anchor" that bolts to the chassis or engine. It has a rod that sticks downward, fitting into a notch in the clutch to keep it from turning. It must be missing or broken, or maybe the clutch is the wrong model, and that's why the clutch itself spins and rips out the wires. Good luck! Please rate if you found this helpful, thanks!

SOURCE: I have a 6 hp self propelled Craftsman mower with

Ok this may be a simple fix. it has a high chance that the fly wheel key has sheared, this will cuse the timing to advance and bite your hand with the rope.
remove the pull starter and the cup ontop of the fly wheel, if you look straight down at the fly wheel nut you can see a cut out in the crank and fly wheel they should be aligned up if not it has sheared. use a lever under the fly wheel and put some pressure on to to lever it up then hit the fly wheel oposite side of the lever AWAY from the the magnet. and the fly wheel should pop up. replace the key and of you go..Make sure you use the OEM brigbs and strat key it is made out of alloy. The cause of this is the blade hitting a kerb or somthing hard,

SOURCE: pull cord wont retract on

Sounds like a spring problem. Remove starter shroud, try pulling it and see if it works. If the spring isn't broke you may have to take another rap on the rope to gain more tension, or spray mechanism with some wd to free it up.

Selfpropelled portion stopped working, replaced broken belt, have correct p/n for new belt, belt is slack ,self propelled not working

There should be 3 pulleys one on the motor on top of the blade, one on the axle for the wheels and one that goes to your cable to engage that pully and tighten the belt, take the cover off that hides the axle and pull your handle for the self propell and see if its tighting, some mowers have a little adjuster to tighten the cable on the self propell handle or even on the cable itself, did you make sure to run the belt between the guides over the blade, let me know what you find so we can further help

Yes it is the transmission. A Mower shop will charge you about $225 to fix.. I order parts online and fixed mine for $90. Transmission consist of 3 gears which turns the rear wheels to self-propel.

Self propelled lawn mower makes whinning noise

disconnect the spark plug turn the mower on its side and inspect the drive belt on the pulley above the blade (on the crankshaft) it may have a shroud over it. Also there is a small gear case that maybe dry that the belt drives, that goes to the wheels, Also try lifting the drive wheels up off the ground and engage them and see if it still does it. if it stops once lifted it might be the bushings on the axle its self.

Have a Yard Man 21"

Hi ccidb11..
I would recommend that you spray the shaft and flywheel with penetrating oil, or WD40.
Then tap the crankshaft, with the nut loosed so it acts as a flat surface to tap on with a hammer.
What you need to do is put your puller on the flywheel and tighten it down really tight, then with a hammer hit the end of the puller (where the wrench goes) a couple of times, then retighten your puller again, and hit the end again.
You will do this until the flywheel will pop off...

Try removing the screws that hold the cover on the self-propelled drive on the top deck. Then actuate the cable and see if there is kinking, binding, and not broken.. See if the springs and levers are free and move on the gearbox. There may even be a little black plug on top of the gearbox you can remove to add lube to the gear drive. Mobil 1 gear lube works well there. Spray WD-40 in the problem areas around the gear drive. If binding is real bad, use penetrating oil instead of WD like Liquid Wrench (cuts rust) or PB Blaster. As far as the blade goes, tilt the mower and check it. You can easily tell if it is sharp or dull; it's most likely dull. With some TMC (Thoughtful Mower Care), you may be able to get it up and running AND cutting.

My toro self propelled isn't self propelling

It may just be a matter of adjusting the cable. Sometimes they dont get them adjusted just right from the factory, heres what you do. Locate the plastic shroud in front of the push mower that covers the drive unit.Determine which screwdriver or torx bit is needed to remove shroud and remove it. After removal you will see a pulley with belt around it, as you pull the handle back to engage self propel you should see the pulley move into the belt to put tension on the belt. You can do this with it running to see if enough tension is being put on the belt,if not, locate the cable end where the small bracket holds the cable in place. Loosen the cable bracket and move cable until you have correct tension again, hope this helps.

Toro 20016 self propel

If you take the wheels off and remove the belt from the small pulley on the the front axle underneath the pulley you should see a small transmission. You usually can split this unit in half . You will see two gears and sometimes one plastic and one metal. The plastic one is usually the culprit. Hope this will help you out. Donnyb60

Toro 20073 self propeled, walk behind mower-how to replace belt ?

Wait until the mower cools off

1. Remove the drive belt cover from the top of the mower
2. Tip the mower up, being careful to not go too far or the oil and fuels may spill out
3. Remove the mower blade - as I recall the bolt is 5/8" (could be 9/16") You will have to hold the blade from turning (if you have impact tools, this will be much easier)
4. Remove the blade
5. Pull the pulley out or off and remove the belt - be careful to not lose the crankshaft "woodruff" key - it's the little piece of half/moon shaped metal that keeps the pulley from spinning on the crankshaft.
6. Reverse the steps to reinstall

You MUST make sure the blade is tight when you reinstall it. Also, the blade usually fits over a couple of pins - make sure they are lined up properly and the blade is installed right-side up.
