Question about Stihl Chain Saw Handle Models 044 046 Ms440 Ms460

1 Answer

I have a stihl 044, older saw and its not running properly. When I try to start it with the full chock, I get fuel ranning out of the muffler every time I try to start it. I take off the air filter and "hot start" it and it starts but didn't idle then dies. I adjust to idle and it idles ok but when I put the air filter back on I have to increase the idle more. When I give it full throttle, it may or maybe bog down or run ok for a bit, then I let off the throttle and it spits and then dies. Any suggestions?

I would say it is flooding, you realy need to pressure test the carb to check the seating of the inlet needle, a simple bulb tester is all you need, connect it to the fuel inlet on the carb ( where the fuel hose is connected ), pump approx 2/3 psi into the carb, it should hold this steady with no leak, any leaks then you will have to fit a new inlet needle, let us know how the test goes.

My o34 Stihl chain saw ran good one day the next day won’t start I rebuilt cab got fire no start I tried starting fluid in plug still no pop to try to start saw is 34 years old well maintained

Have you checked the compression on the cyl. A saw that old may have lost compression and also have you checked the muffler to be sure it is not plugged. I base this on you saying you have fire to the plug.

Stihl 024 AV won't start. Replaced carb, plug, air filter, fuel line. Ran fine for 10 min then quit.

Fuel mixed properly and fresh?
if you put a few drops of fuel directly into carb, does it run for a few seconds?
have you checked the piston for scoring? (By removing muffler)

Stihl saw runs but won't idle.

The paper pumps get stiff and do not pump fuel very well. It's the new Ethanol gas that is the Carb Killers. You need a rebuild kit not just disassemble and clean.
You have IDLE ADJUST Low Speed adjust and High speed adjust. Low and High speed adjust have nothing to do with Idle.

Saw cuts out when i push chock in

Main jet or inlet screen is plugged. Fuel pump or metering diaphram compromised due to old stale fuel, mostly from sitting for extended periods with fuel in tank, or fuel line is deteriorated.

How do you start a STIHL MS460 chainsaw

I am a Stihl mechanic. The proper starting procedure is to set the switch to full choke. Pull the starter rope no more than three times. Now raise the switch up one notch and pull it till it starts. Stihl products will flood if pulled more than three times with the choke on. Thanks, George

044 stihl sawchain wont idle just dies out and sometimes runs at high idle

This sounds like an air leak. Checking all of your hoses and making sure the crankshaft seals are good is where to go after adjusting the carburetor to factory settings.
remove the muffler and make sure the engine does not look like this:

The chainsaw boggs down immediately when it contacts the wood. It runs somewhat choppy as well at idle. It is new to me and this is the first time I ran the saw. Is this a carb adjustment thing? plugged...

Clean the air filter. Remove, clean, and reinstall the muffler and spark arrestor.

If my new saw I would consider a Stihl mechanic tune up $40±. New plug, new fuel filter, pressure/vacuum tests and carburetor adjustment.

Carburetor Adjustment by Madsens.com
http://www.madsens1.com/saw%20carb%20tune.htm
  • CW is leaner; to lean will destroy the saw. If over tightened closed (CW) the adjustment screw faces are easily marred; marred adjustments are difficult to impossible to set properly.
  • Clean the air filter; adjusting with a dirty filter can cause a run lean condition once cleaned and the saw run.
  • Clean the spark arrestor and muffler; if the saw cannot exhale it cannot inhale.
  • There are 2 wav (sound - idle & full - may not be highlighted) files that I find most helpful, I think you will too.
If you have more questions or need additional help please reply below and I will get back to you. Thank you for using FixYa and Good Luck. HTH
