There could be a few problems. Check the air filters and make sure that no holes are present in them. Then check to make sure the unit has compression. A general check of the compression for a Stihl unit is to hold the unit up by the rope and it should hold itself up. If it slips down really quick or if it does not hold itself for more than a couple of seconds before the rope starts coming out, then the unit is low on compression and will need a new piston and cylinder.
Also another thing to check is the carburetor. With the new fuel with ethanol/methanol in it, it can damage parts in the carburetor. The sealant that went over the welch plugs will come off and it will flood the unit out because there is no regulation of the fuel going into the engine. You can try putting new sealant, such as clear fingernail polish over them, and see if it holds and will regulate the fuel correctly. If the air filters have holes in them then the low compression could be caused from dirt ingestion and it could have caused wear on the main bearings. You can check for bearing wear by seeing if the flywheel or the clutch will move up and down and sided to side. If this is the case then you will need to purchase a new unit.

I cannot locate my owners manual and have not used the Homelite Ranger 16 inch in quite some time --- What is the fuel and oil requirement??

most 2 stroke Homelite chainsaws run on a fuel/oil mix of 50:1 --- But on some older model saws they say to use 40:1 mix.
I own several 2 stroke machines and I use 50:1 on everything and they all run fine ( even when they say 40:1 ).

I need to replace the gas hose that goes to the crankcase on a stihl ts760 . Whats involved in doing this repair

This is not difficult. The impulse hose as it is called presses on to a brass fitting under the intake manifold. remover the filter housing, filter, carburetor, and tank as needed to make room to get in and replace it. Parts can be ordered from you local dealer like www.arcolawn.com

Hope it helps

I just purchased a Stihl 041AV chainsaw and need to know what the gas to oil ratio is. Thanks.

The quick/easy answer: Use Stihl (or comparable) two-stroke engine oil at 40:1. A good name brand gas is less likely to gunk up your engine.

Background:
The old manual recommended Castrol SAE 40 mixed at 20:1 with regular gas.

All the modern Stihl chainsaw manuals recommend using 90+ octane unleaded gasoline mixed with Stihl two-stroke engine oil at a 50:1.

Since this is an older saw that runs at a lower RPM than modern saws, you probably don't want to run it quite as lean as 50:1. 40:1 is going to be about the right mix

If you want a printed manual for your chainsaw, you can request one here.

Chainsaw collectors corner has some other useful specs here.

If this answer was useful, please give it a vote! Thanks.

My homelite 16 dies constantly

Does it suddenly stop running? (probably electric) Do this while still hot:

You may need to use a jumper wire between the threaded part of the plug and the cooling fins. You don’t have to bend up the electrode.

Or sputter and slowly quit (like out of gas).
Try loosening the fuel cap (rotate the saw if necessary). If it smooths out, runs and accelerates correctly you have a plugged fuel vent. HTH

A local chainsaw seller/mechanic (Stihl best mechanics in my area) can diagnose for about $10. A repair and tuneup usually $40 - 60. Your starter arm will thank you. If tuned ask what fuel mix they used (should be 50:1) and affix a tag or label to your saw.

Whats the ratio 50-1

From your Operation Manual
Mixing ratio
1:50 (2%) for all engines
It and an IPL can be found here:
HusqvarnaUSA.com
http://www.husqvarna.com/us/homeowner/support/download-manuals/
Enter 455 (no XPs, Es, just the numbers)
Serial number decode – for use with IPL
06 1500198
06 = year produced – 2006 (single digit before 2000)
15 = week produced - March
00198 = 198th unit Husky produced that week

Fuel/Oil Mixture
  1. Use a quality 2 cycle oil and mix it to the OIL supplier's recommended ratio. Today I use Stihl 2 cycle oil mixed @ 50:1 in a Pioneer that I purchased new in 1980. There are no gouges or scratches on the piston or cylinder and I have no carbon build up on the piston top. The manual (on stone tablets) recommends 24:1. Over the years the mixture has leaned from 24:1 (Saw Recommendation) to 28:1 (Lawn boy mower recommendation) to 32:1 (Oil provider 8oz/2gal - used for many years) and finally the last 5 (±) years 50:1 (Stihl 2.6oz/1gal)
  2. Any fuel containing ethanol is not good with chainsaws. Mix what you expect to use within a few months. Anything over 6 months old use up in a 4 cycle engine. HTH

What is the right fuel mix for a mcculloch 510 chain saw

Mix it to the ratio recommended by the oil supplier, 50:1 today with a good quality oil.

Please do NOT use Outboard motor oil, get a quality oil from a local chainsaw seller.
