Proform ekg 765 won't run when standing on. Have run all tests on belt, amp draw, tension, lube, volts from controller, replaced controller...

I replaced controller because it was only putting out a couple volts to motor with the A+ and A- leads disconnected. The motor only draws 2.6 amps at 2.5 mph without anyone on the belt and when I get on, it drops in speed but still only draws about 7 amps. Will almost come to a complete stop if I don't get off. I weigh 210 lbs. Belt tension is correct and I did the test of having the incline up and pushed off and the belt spun until I went off the back. Lubed it up anyway and the pad the belt runs on is completely smooth.

Have you heard of testing the motor with an 18 volt cordless drill battery? Do you just touch wires to the battery contacts?

  • benz_larry Apr 05, 2011

I have a proform ekg 765 that was stopping a couple minutes into a workout. The display would stay on and the reset would not trip and it would restart after trying for a couple minutes. There was a slight variance in speed at the lower settings but past 4 to 5 mph, it ran fine. I lubed the belt pad, checked the belt for 3 to 4 inches of slack, did the friction test of setting the incline to it's highest position and pushing off, all good. The motor pulls 2.5 amps at 2.5 mph and if you get on, it goes to 7 amps. The controller was only putting out 1 to 2 v. to the motor so I replaced it and re-calibrated. Now it runs fine without anyone on the belt but as soon as I step on, (210 lbs) it slows way down and unless I step off, it will go to nothing. The underside of the belt and pad are completely smooth and recently oiled.

There is a motor which spins the treadmill belt. When you start the treadmill, the motor starts running to spin the belt. But if the motor cannot take the load it stops working. In your case, the motor and motor control board is got weak and this is causing the problem. ---------- Or the other possibility is the treadmill belt, the belt on which you step. That belt should be smooth, there is grease in the inner side of belt to keep it lube and run fluently. If that oily grease gets dried up then belt gets bit stiff or jammed up.So get this both possibilities checked.First try lubing the belt internally and then try check the motor and motor control board. To locate motor control board its simple. On the side of motor you will see a electric plug in connector, the other end of that connector gets connected to motor control board.Remove that connector , clean it and reconnect after 5 minutes, then check. In some cases this resets the internal control system and everything, works normally. But its not always possible then removing and reconnecting connector helps. In other cases the motor or control board needs to be replaced. If the motor gets weak, then internal coils in motor gets burned up.----------- You mentioned in your comment that you already tried lubing the belt and it runs smooth without stepping on it, so this clears that motor is got weak and its not taking load. This will help.Thanks.Helpmech.

The motor might have gone bad. You should notice an increase in the current as you put in load but no work is being done by the motor. If you can remove the motor from the unit to do further test and to observe for physical damages. It may just need cleaning or grease may need to be replaced.

removal of the motor to conduct additional test would help isolate it. If there is a circuit in between the motor and the power, say the control circuit then you can conclude that its the motor that is the issue. Make sure to apply the correct voltage stated directly to the motor. The rating should be stamped on the motor body.

not with the drill but I have an ac to dc converter. I cannot remember the voltage requirement of the motor you have but you can get it from the housing of the motor or getting a voltage reading from the circuit while it is on. Touching the correct terminals to the motor would be fine.

lube the deck belt, you have deck worn, proceed in according with the instruction manual maintenance. 2) check the drive belt and replace it if necessary and tight 3) tes the input voltage motor, if there are the motor need repair or replace 4) test the output voltage from main board, for input voltage for the main motor, if there are NOT, the board is faulty.
Try if you can RUN the software calibration for diagnose and troubleshooting.
sincerely. God bless you.

Motor has burning smell. belt and controller were

May I ask witch belt? Most treadmills have two belts, one to drive the gearing and one the patient walks/runs on. The tension and alignment are factors in the load on the motor. Too much tension on the belt the patient stands on will overload the motor. Alignment of both belts is a load factor. Eliminating the belts, tension, belt rollers, and control only power wiring and the motor is left. If the motor is the culprit call a local electric motor repair shop for testing and possible repair. Maybe cheaper than a new motor. : ) : )

If I understand correct, the treadmill will not run correct unless you have the safety key in. Well yes this is correct because once the safety key is removed the treadmill will stop. If your treadmill is running extremely fast just by turning it on, you may need a new speed sensor. www.AtlantaFitnessRepair.com
