Question about NetGear WGR614 Wireless Router

1 Answer

We purchased a netgear wgr614 wireless router and hooked it up thru my hp pavilion desktop so my husband could get my Earthlink DSL internet access on his Acer 5336 laptop. Since installing the router, both of our computers seem to be running quite a bit slower-the Acer more so. Is there a step we didnt complete thoroughly enough or is this just how slow the systems are going to be with a wireless router set-up? please help, my husband has no patience for this- if there's anyway we can troubleshoot and fix this problem Id greatly appreciate it! Thank you, Leah Prindl

Hi Leah,
If connecting your pc directly to the modem is faster. Definitely it is the routers fault. If it is still slow then it is your Earthlink DSL is faulty.
You can try reducing the MTU size (default is 1500). You can try these values 1492 or 1300 whichever works fine. You have to access the router's setup page to do this.
Click the link below on how to change the MTU size on a netgear router.

Its hard to diagnose cause the process starts long before your current setup..ie, programming your router. So I have attached a website from Microsoft that walks you thru the steps to set up your wireless home network so you can backtrack...good luck and let me know if you have any problems. Pls rate this solution.

Connect the lan cable from the dsl modem into the first port on your netgear router ..
make sure your dsl modem is on PPPoE mode so that it autoconnects..
Now just connect to your wireless router via your pc interface..
*Do add a network key to your wireless network to avoid unwanted access

Question on setting up two computers

Yes, I have pretty much the same setup at home. Wired desktop and wireless laptop. On the back of your wireless router, there should be 4 or 5 wired connections which you can use. You will only have to use the setup disk on one computer. Basically, the setup disk is for the router, not the computers, it simply guides you through the router configuration process. You can also do this manually, the manual for the router will give those instructions as well.
