Use a 8.5 feet(102 inches) That would be the size of this whip. One thing to do put it up high in the air in 15,30,45 feet lengths. Have heavy grounding like 4 metal rods drove into earth 6 ft. use a tower and also ground it to a big metal filing cabinet or water pipes. I found that your Electric meter box is grounded real well. Use big low loss coaxial 50 ohm in the lengths 9,18,27,36. Your hearing is through sometimes ground planes. Lets say you use a tower or Tv pole 30 feet. Mount your 102" in. whip on top- seperate it from 4 ground prongs by rigging PVC pipe in between. Make 4 Ground planes about 5 feet go out North,East,South,West. Run 30 feet of coax to your house. It should pick up better an transmit better. Check SWR (1.5 or so) SWR Varies 1.1-2.1 ratios. I never had no problems talking on mine 5 to 30 miles away. Turn up receive inside radio. Its near front ; may be white variable or chrome with screwdriver slot. Take speaker side off and look near left handside front when radio is upside down.

Static in my cobra ultra 3.

The easiest way to check this is to hook an SWR meter to the antenna to see if the cables are ok. If the SWR is low then it would show no problems in the transmit and therefore the receive would be good.

Facts about Cb radio.

a Cb(Citizens Band) radio usually only broadcast on frequencies 26.965 to 27.405 megahertz. It is for mostly short range use 3 to 20 miles range. It comes with legal power of 4 watts. Ranges average about 5 miles. Don't expect big results off this little low-power Am transmitter. A basic 40 channel radio, Microphone, and "Magnet Mount" antenna plus 12 volt Dc 5A power supply will suffice. Place the Magnet mount on a metal file cabinet inside your house. hook up the Radio Shack 12 volt 3-5 Amp power supply to your 40 channel radio, Say Uniden pro510xl or Cobra 19 plus mini compact about $39 for these types. A $20 Radio Shack magnet mount. Turn on radio an talk. If you live in the city near lots of friends who have one too. You can talk on a private channel like Ch#40 and talk all night. The waves get quieter at night and extend farther into the Ionesphere;conditions are favorable 8pm to 12am. You should talk loudly within 5-7 miles easy. I like friends nearby; who live within 3 miles of me. Don't expect Long Distance with these radios. Unless you buy a big 1000 Watt Rf Linear an Tower 100 ft. with big Antennas costing $10,000. But remember the FCC will knock on your door and may give you 5 years $10,000 fines for anything of Linear amps 1000Watts. Just stick with basic tune and adjust, power mics(Cobra sells best). Talk with friends about fishing, hunting, gardens, tools, cars, women etc. Have Fun!!!

I recently bought a cobra 29 ltd classic the came with two antennas. 1 3 foot antenna not sure what brand, and an 8 foot fiberglass antenna once again unsure of the brand. i tried to tune my antenna but...

Hi Matt, my name is John. Try making sure your antenna is grounded, and that it is away from anything blocking the transmit (steel rod) element. A good magnet mount antenna is a good one. Turn on the radio, and turn the squelch all the way to the left, and turn the RF gain all the way open, and turn the mic gain all the way up. Have someone check your SWR on the antenna, like Radio Shack, it,s a free check. That should about do it...Let me know how it goes....Could be internal....cheers....John

My friend and I just purchased Cobra 29 LTD Classic CB's today as well as Wilson 110 metal whip antennas. We each have the antennas mounted in the center of our suvs' roofs. We are planning on using them...

Check your antenna. Make sure it is getting a proper ground. If mag mount; make sure base of antenna and where you put it are both super clean. Check where whip goes into coil or base. Make sure all allen screws are tight and whip is not either all the way down to the base or up to the top. If antenna is mounted; make sure that it has a good ground. You might have to remove some paint around the base to get a good connection. DO NOT TRANSMIT WITH A HIGH SWR. YOU CAN BURN OUT THE EXPENSIVE POWER OUTPUT TRANSISTOR. Hope it helps.

Is it my CB antenna or something else

First off, Midland makes a fine radio. Make sure your squelch is turned all the way down to receive distant signals (down meaning counter clockwise). The through the glass antennas are not the best thing in the world. I personally use a 102" whip and a 6" spring on a modified mirror mount. It is installed on the tailgate side of the tool box. The TX and RX is amazing. Wilson and K40 make great antennas also.

Cant get SWR below 3.5

A ground wire will not replace the lack of ground plane. Try a different antenna altogether (possibly one with a magnet mount) and mount it on some metal surface like even the front hood and retest.

I am sure the problem you will find is with the lack of a proper ground plane.

Non grnd steel antena

I assume your coax is not hooked up properly or you have some kink of a short in your antenna connection ( thats if your cb is working properly ) Radio Shacks Information that suggested that the 102" whip is the perfect antenna is their opion only as I prefer to recommend a full wave antenna system to my customers, but I do assure you, the 102" whip does work well if it's properly installed. I have found the main problem in the 102" whip installation is when the center hole is cut to install the antenna, it's not cut big enough, which grounds the antenna. It's not suppose to be grounded in any fashion to the automible chassis. The ground of this antenna comes from the 3 screws mounted around the outside of the antenna mount. Check that for sure. If you can't correct the problem. write me back at this web sight of direct at wyoed1@aol.com. Good Luck

Hearing loss

If your setup is able to rx and tx with no problems, sounds like his coax or antenna is bad. First, I'd try out his radio in your vehicle, since you know yours is working good. Just to see if it rx and tx good. If so, I would check his antenna and coax to see if they are good.
