DNS is a function of the Windows network or a service. if you are using windows xp or higher you can type the name of the computer into the run command to access it.

\\homecoumputer
double slash then the name of the computer.

if you want a dns to connect to your system remotely i would recommend ddns. they have a free service and its easy to use.

WRT4G2 VI wireless router. I was upating the firmware when the power flashed. I have no access to the router's gui and the router is not broadcasting. I am not getting a dhcp address

do a hard reset for the router by pressing the reset button for 10-20 seconds...
check whether its getting a dhcp address...
if it is still not getting an ip address, then try to assign a static ip address in the range of your router on your computer...

for example...
The default ip address of linksys is 192.168.1.1.............
then assign

IP address 192.168.1.5
Subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway 192.168.1.1

Also assign a static DNS
Primary DNS : 8.8.8.8
Secondary DNS : 8.8.4.4

Now try to open the GUI of your router...

LAN Network, both PC's with static IP's and defaullt and DNS addresses are 192.1683.1.1 tried the other defaults. Both machines connected. when i ping each others IP's request timed out. please help

Hi,
Can not really understand what exactly you have done. Please try the following steps:
1. Assign static IP on pc 1 as 192.168.1.2 assign subnet mask as 255.255.255.0. 2. No need to assign default gateway and DNS. 3. Assign static IP on pc 2 as 192.168.1.3 assign subnet mask as 255.255.255.0. 4. No need to assign default gateway and DNS.
Open dos and try to ping. In case if the ping fails then disable all the firewall on both the pc's and try again.
If you are running windows vista then in network and sharing center make sure network discovery and file sharing is enabled.

Rashish

I am using Belkin F5D7632ak4A. My problem is that:

Hi there,

In doing a port forwarding, you actually need to assign a manual address on the computer where you are using the service port for the computer not to change the IP address. If your private address on the network is 192.168.1.XX then you may assign on your computer 192.168.1.2-99 any of the address there. Also you may need to know the DNS you are using on the router which you can find on the status tab of the router.

To assign an IP address, if your computer is wired then right click on the wireless connection and select properties, if it is a wireless computer right click on the wireless connection and select properties.

After you have selected the said properties> look for Internet Protocol TCP/IP then select properties.

Then click on USE THE FOLLOWING IP ADDRESS and USE THE FOLLOWING DNS server as well.

then from there you can put in the set of address you have for ex.
IP address 192.168.1.10
subnet mask 255.255.255.0
Default gateway 192.168.1.1
DNS
preferred DNS 66.28.87.105
alternate DNS 66.28.87.104

Note: these are just example. after you have done assigning an IP address then you may do the port forwarding again. change the IP address on the port forwarding tab to the IP address you have assigned. Then don't forget to save the settings.

I have a Linksys wireless router on my desktop computer and have another computer with an adapter. However, I get a reading that ''cannot find server''. I also have a laptop that operates with a ''Belkin''...

"cannot find server'' is usually a DNS error.

Solutions to the problem may be:

Statically assign the DNS servers in the adapters IPv4 properites. The adapter uses the router's gateway IP for its DNS server by default.

You may also want to statically assign the DNS servers in the router as well.

If you to to the command prompt on a computer that is able to browse and type the command "ipconfig /all" without the quotes, check for the DNS servers listed.

Youu can also find a list of public DNS servers here:

It says that my computer is connected to network and internet but it my computer cant browse in the internet

Likely a DNS problem.

1. Check to see if your router is set to obtain DNs as dynamic or static (probably dynamic). Verify the listed primary & secondary DNS servers are correct for your ISP.
2. Check router to see if it acts as DHCP server for your network to assign ip numbers to clients. If so, then verify your computer as dynamic, otherwise set static ip in the same subnet.
3. Verify gateway assignments.

Router blocks internet access after a while

Sorry, but i've only recently joined this site, so if its too late apologies, but most people have this problem, after internet innactivity, setting timeout to 'o' doesnt do anything on any routers ive worked with. Search and download a little programme that constantly pings a certain site it uses itself to simulate you being active online. It too frustrates me! :-(
