Question about Western Digital Computers & Internet

1 Answer

I have a WD Elements 2Tgb external hard drive, of which I have transferred a lot of videos. This works fine on the computer, but my WD TV Live HD Media Player will not recognise the ext hard drive. It works perfectly well on other external hard drive, but not the one mentioned above. Can you give me any help on this

Hi, Many thanks for your quick response. Negative, there is no error message at all. The USB indicator does not light up on the WD TV Live HD Med Player. It does not recognise it at all

Yes, thank you. Will not know for certain as it will take some time transferring the data. If any further probs, will get back to you.

Do you have an Error like Media Library Process Failed or The Attached USB device is not Available on the home screen.

    Media Library Process Failed:

    - Make sure that the USB has no Read-Only Protection.

    - The USB is not using the HSF+ Journaling File System

    - There are enought storage space on the USB Drive.

The Attached USB device is not Available on the Home screen:

    - The Media Player only supports mass USB storage mode. Make sure that the USB device is configured as a Mass Stirage Device.
    - Make sure that the USB device file system is supported (NTFS, Fat/Fat32, or HSF+)

There is a known issue that has been found with some of the 2TB Elements drives where they were formatted incorrectly in the factory, resulting in a partition that was slightly (a few kilobytes) larger than the actual size of the drive. Windows is able to handle this error, but the drivers used in the WDTV Live won't mount a drive with this error. Reformatting the drive in Windows fixes it.

Reformatting the the drive using Windows File format (NTFS/FAT32) will fix the issue. Make sure that you back up the contents of your WD hard drive because you will lose the info when you reformat the drive.

If you have questions please let me know. Thanks for using Fixya

Hi i`ve just bought the wd elements 320gb yesterday. the problem is that i put the usb in and the light on the product is on but thats all. its not installing and i cant find it on my computer.

The obvious question first is the drive connected with the provided AC adapter?

Are you connecting it directly to a USB port or powered USB Hub? This is not important in external hard drives but it does on portable HD. But just in case keep this in mind.

Other thing is that you have to install the WD Smartware software.

If nothing works, try it on another computer.

If it works, must be a USB port problem.

God Bless You!

My wd elements external hd is not recognized under windows 7. The pc diagnostics say that the device is working properly and the correct drivers are installed?

Go to Administrative Tools in Control Panel. Computer Management then Storage, Disk Management. You'll probably have to recognise it and assign a drive number.

WD Elements 500 GB

Hi bobo08,

I'd first check to see if the drive is working correctly with some utilities that WD provides, then once you determine if the drive works, you can either return it the retailer or it's working correctly by using these utilities. Here's the link to that drive. HERE

Good Luck
