Assuming that the unit was wired properly from the factory and without being able to look at the switch I would have to agree that the switch is bad. The different speeds are obtained by having a different winding for each speed. If the unit was wired properly at the factory and never had three different speeds then the switch is not rotating between all the contacts. The switch should only be a couple of dollars and would certainly be a cheap solution to try. You can check the existing switch by removing it from the circuit completely and checking the continuity with a DMM from the input to each output as you switch it. Continuity should move from one to two to three. If not the switch is bad. If the switch checks out OK then you have a bad winding in the fan and probably need a new unit. Good luck.

SOURCE: Glass Shade wont come off
The same thing happened to me, you put them on two tight. just right now i was going to take mine off so i could let u know which way to turn it. but can't take it off and i just put it on last night, & not too tight. i just remember that i have an xtra one, okay i got it it's counter clock wise. you're going to need someone to help you hold the light kit fitter assembly while you turn it. careful not to strip the light kit fitter assembly. mine rotates both ways now because when i tried to take it off it would turn so mabybe it's the other way, and nothing. then i got **** & started to used more force, back and fort, by myself even with the help of my friend it was a ***** to get it off. good luck. SOURCE: Glass replacement for Hunter fan
I spoke to the people at hunter, they have two styles available , neither match the existing one that I have. They said I could send mine in and they would replace it possibly if it was a manufacturer defect. I think it is a design issue. Glass is heated and cooled repeatedly and the base becomes brittle, mine fell and put a big dent in my table. good luck finding a replacement if you dont like what they have.

You need to remove the entire light kit first by removing the 3 screws around the housing, one completely and just loosen 2 of them, turn slightly counter clockwise and pull down to release, depress wire harness clamp and pull apart, now you can work on the fixture.
