My MTD driving yard mower shuts itself off when I engage the cutting blades. It was working just fine and then I stopped, put it in reverse, put it back in forward and re-engaged the blades and it just started shutting itself off....like something came undone or unattached. Any clues?

Sounds like a safety switch. Just as there is a safety switch under the seat that shuts mower off if you get off seat while engine is running, theres also safety switches for, pto, drive, reverse, etc. I would get a multimeter and look for switches under chassis and test with meter for continuity.
there is a safty switch look for it the gearshift pushes it find it and unplug the wire one under the seat too if it stops when you get off the seat unplug it too if you want
Riding mower have three safety switches. One under the seat, one under the clutch and one on the blade lever. Make sure all are making contact as the button tip can get worn after many uses. These can be replaced. One trick you can try before that..
Sit on the mower and pull the blade engagement lever back further than necessary and hold it in that position while trying to start it. This may work as it puts more pressure on the safety switch button and makes contact possible.
Did you try to disengage the safety feature that should shut the tractor off when the blades are engaged and the tractor is placed in reverse? I believe that it is located under the shift leaver
