Question about Sony Playstation 3 (PS3) Console

3 Answers

For months my Sony PS3 has been locking up. Now I can't even navigate the main menu without it locking up. I've tried to restore the system to no avail... Now when trying to set it back up again it hangs up as soon as it asks me to enter my username. I've restored the system 3 times already and have also replaced the hard drive. I've tried all of the solutions that have been given in the forums, but nothing is working. I've had this system for 3 years now and only had good use out of it for the first year. We ran this system the first time on Christmas Day 2008 and one year to the day is when we started having issues. This is the first time I have written about this as I am fed up. Thanks, Kirk

Thanks for the post. Yes I clean it out weekly. I do notice that it still gets a little warm. The PS3 will still lock up even after being shut down for quite some time.

I've cleaned my PS3 the "Sony Way" using a vacuum cleaner. I've installed the latest firmware. It's still not working. Now I am to the point where I want to send it in to Sony (or a qualified repair place), but the Playstation 3 site does not load. Is there a direct link to request repairs?

  • kkintop Apr 05, 2011

Hi! Thanks for the response. Yesterday I just got frustrated and shut the whole system down over night (unplugged power and everything) and today decided to give it another try. When I turn it on it just gets to the little sparklies before the main menu loads and it freezes. If I can contact Sony on their website I'll see what I can do to have it repaired. Yesterday I was having issues getting the Playstation USA site to load.

Thanks again for all that tried to help, but I think my PS3 is beyond help...at least what I can do.

Apart from doing a system restore on your Playstation 3 and replacing the hard drive
there isn't much you can do that won't void the warrenty, your best bet to resolving this issue is to contact Sony themselfs for them to sort out this problem.

Because consoles these days are very close to computers, they can be modified to be used for piracy behaviour, so any attempt to open your Playstation3 will void any warrenty you currently have.

Depending on your country of residence just go to the relevent playstation site and there is a warrenty and support section for you to contact and for this issue to be resolved.

Hope this all helped.

Hello,

Have you tried this? If the below directions does not work, then I think it's high time you contacted Sony and get another PS3. The case would be a critical one if the below doesn't solve the problem;

Put your PS3 in Standby Mode. The first thing your going to want to know is your model number. It can be found on the back panel of the PS3 on the serial number label, and it will begin with CECH. Example - Serial: XXXXXXXXXXXX-CECHXXX -

For models: CECHA01, BO1, E01, E01MG, G01, H01, H01MG, K01, LO1, AND P01, it will have a power switch on the back. Flip it off then back on and you will have a solid red indicator light on the front.

For models: CECH-2001A and 2001B, press the power button on the front until the indicator light turns red. If all else fails unplug the power cord and plug it back

Time to enter Safe Mode. Press and hold your finger over the power button on the front until you hear three beeps and the indicator light goes back to red. Then release the button. (The second you touch it you will hear a beep, that's the first beep. Five seconds later a second beep, another five seconds the third and final beep will sound then the indicator light will return to red.)

Press and hold your finger over the power button again until you hear a quick double beep. The release the button. (The second you touch it you will hear a beep, that's the first beep. Five seconds later a second beep, another five seconds you will hear the double beep.)

You will then see this screen. "Connect the controller with the USB cable, then press the PS button".

Connect the USB cable to the USB port on the front of your PS3 and the top of your game controller, (between the left and right bumpers). Then Press the PS button in the center of the controller.

You will then see this screen. -REMINDER: -BY DOING THE FOLLOWING ALL OF YOUR DATA ON YOUR PS3 WILL BE LOST, YOUR ONLINE STATS ARE ON THE NETWORK SO YOU WILL GET THAT STUFF BACK, INCLUDING GAMES AND ADDONS YOU BOUGHT FROM THE PSN.-

Select option number 5. (Restore PS3 System). Then select yes to perform step. You will then see this screen. "The hard disk's file system is corrupt and will be restored.

The PS3 will then restart. You will see many different languages, all that is is saying is, "Connect the controller with the USB cable, then press the PS button". Press the PS button and set your settings when it finishes it will start up and its fixed!

Good luck.

Make sure you have updated to the latest firmware. If after updates it still freezes then it may be a heat problem. Have you ever cleaned the PS3 out before? Dust can sometimes cause heat. Many forums suggest just contacting Sony support, they seem to be very helpful and supportive.

Hello,

You can try the steps below. Its from PlayStation Forum:

1. Turn off Playstation®3.
2. Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again.
3. Once the System has been shutdown, re-press you finger until you hear 2 consecutive beeps
4. When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button.
5. You will be prompted to plug in your controller via USB and then hit the PS button
6. The Recovery menu will pop up.

The current Recovery Menu supports:
• Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION®3 System.
• Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
• Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
• Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION®3.
• Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
• System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION®3 System

If the above steps still does not solve the problem, then I think will have to update your Ps3.

Update your PS3 (in the settings menu the 1st option).

Go on the internet browser on the PS3 then go on the menu press triangle then on one of them there are delete cookies and the delete the others as
well as cookies.

You could also try this as well: put the PS3 on then press the eject button (with no disc in) then hold it and switch the PS3 off at the back with your finger on the eject button still holding it, then put it back on and the fan test should be working this may cool it down. It might be over heating.

But if your problem is not still solved, then maybe you should call sony for further assistance.

I wish you good luck

My Ps3 will play and work fine with everything, It can play movies (dvd & Blu-Ray) and I can even download a demo from the store and play that, but it wont play and of my ps3 game discs.

Unfortunately this same issue happened to me as well, and I had to send my PS3 in for repair. But maybe what I was told to do will work for you! Here's what I was told.

You're going to want to backup everything on your PS3. The Backup Utility can be found in the System Settings Menu on the Settings Menu on the XMB menu (XMB > Settings > System Settings). More info on how to backup your information can be found on the Playstation website, found here.

Next you'll want to restore your PS3 to it's default/factory settings. It's also found in the Settings Menu on the XMB, labelled "Restore Default Settings." Just follow the on-screen instructions.

Once it's restored, see if the problem is fixed. If it is, congrats! Just use the Backup Utility to restore all of your backed up data.

If not, either try the online Knowledge Center or send in your PS3 for repair (if it's under warranty, it's free!)

Hope it all works out! If you send in your PS3 they won't send you won't get it back for almost a month...

The GPU overheated. Most likely fried, but you can try to let it sit for a few hours and see if it will boot again.
On an outside chance, you may try resetting the video options when you boot up the system. To do this, press the power button until it beeps once a second time. This will reset the video options and restore functionality if the problem is software related.

Ps3 is moving without a controller plugged in

Go into settings and click restore settings. You dont need to back-up anything unless you format which I recomend to if the problem presists after you restore settings.

Hope this works,

Ps3 freezes before getting to main menu!!

I had the same problem bud. I rushed and contacted sony but the next day my friend told me a great solution tht safed me 150 $. Well basicly your ps3 is lika a PC. All you nerd to do is to get to the hard drive menu. By holding the power button for 10 sec but do that for 3 times. That will take you to the blue menu. From there just reset your hard drive and wola brand new.
Ps Same thing happend after i downloaded the house app. booo to the house lol

Ps3 wont load games up

I had a similar problem. My PS3 did not start the disk based games. Those disk based games were not visible in the game menu. I did not have problems with the normal movie DVDs or Movie Blu Rays. Those were working fine. Also downloaded games were working ok.

In case you have the similar problem, you should try the following steps;

The PS3 has a special Recovery Menu, which you can access in the following way;:

1. Turn off Playstation 3.

• Restart System: Restarts the PLAYSTATION 3 System.
• Restore Default Settings: Reset all system settings back to default.
• Restore File System: Checks for corrupt/missing system files.
• Rebuild Database: Rebuilds the OS for the PLAYSTATION 3.
• Restore PS3 System: Fresh restore; Deletes everything and starts from Scratch.
• System Update: Update the PLAYSTATION 3 System

Select option "Rebuild Database".

After PS3 has executed the DB rebuilding operation, the disc games will be visible again in the menu and are starting automatically when inserted to PS3.

No main menu, just wavy lines with sony entertainment

This is a hard reset of the system, used when there is a catastrophic error etc. I have trawled these kind of sights and the main concensus is to ensure you have a back up of all important data. I experienced the same issue but the method above was advised by my games shop.

Ps3 freezes before getting to main menu!!

Try Accessing the Ps3 Recovery Menu
Turn off Ps3
Hold the power button down; the system will turn on and turn off once again
Once the system has been shutdown, re-press your finger until you hear 2 consecutive (quick) beeps
When you hear the 2 beeps take finger off power button
You will be prompted to plug in your controller via usb and then hit the ps button
The recovery menu will pop up

Recovery menu
* restart system
* restore default settings
* restore file system
*rebuild database
*restore ps3
*system update
Now I was not sure which one to choose. I clicked restart system and that did NOT work so I clicked restore ps3 and lost everything but it DEFINITELY WORKED!!
