When you remove the encoder motor, you should be able to manually shift the transfer case. If all is working manually and it "comes out" of 4wd, you may need to have the TCCM reprogrammed.
my 2001 chevy silverado would not swich some time and with a lot of agravation of repeat pushing of the buttons. change out the 4x4 switches in the dash solved the problem, the orginal switches soldering cracked makeing for bad connections "transfer case switch" Auto parts warehouse
chk the linkage under the truck for any foriegn objects. block the tires and have a friend put light pressure on the shifter while you lightly tap the linkage.
If it's electronic 4x4, check the wire to the 4x4 sensor that should be located behind the front differential. If this wire is unhooked or broken, then it will keep it from shifting out of 4wd. Otherwise I would check to make sure there is adequate fluid in both the transfer case and front differential. Good luck
i had the same problem and it ended up being short in the front axles where the actuator at or the switch on the transfer case under body where the shift lever at
you have a faulty control solenoid in the transfer case this is ecm controled . the part itself can be prchased for replacement at either the dealership or at a Napa,Oreillys,etc.. please rate this thanks
