The colour cartridge you are trying to use may be defective. You can try cleaning the contacts of the cartridge by wiping it with cotton or cloth, and then insert it back to the printer. If it doesn't work, you'll need to replace the colour cartridge since it is already defective.

Sorry you can't use PG-40 on MP480. Canon MP480 printer takes only Canon PG-510 Black Ink Cartridge, Canon CL-511 Colour Ink Cartridge or Canon CL513 Colour Ink Cartridge (this one is high yield colour cartridge).

Printer head problem?

Are you using a factory new ink cartridge?
If you are using a refilled or third party cartridge that may well be your problem. Most manufacturers build logic into their products to prevent the use of “Other Equipment Manufactured” cartridges as well as re-filled cartridges.
They do this to prevent problems from contaminated inks causing problems with print quality or damaging the physical printhead.
If you are using factory new cartridges, then please call Canon Technical Support for assistance with the warranty on the Canon Cartridges

You have to look online for the canon tool to reset the ink counters. When you refill these cartridges you have to run this program in order to re-use the cartridges.

No colour printing

The problem with Canon printers sometimes is that, if you do not use original cartridges and put compatible ones, the printer will not recognise them. Even if you refill the originl ones the printer will still think that they are empty due to the microchip that every cartridge has. Try using original inks. If you already used original inks, then another reason might that the ink tubes have benn blocked because of dried ink if you haven't used your printer for a long time. Try performing a deep clean through the printer application.
Hope that helps
