Question about Briggs Stratton IC Horizontal OHV Engine 305cc 1450 Series 145 Gross Torque 1in x 3 2132in Shaft Model 2053320537B1

It is a 3.5 hp engine on an edger, that starts but quickly dies and then it won't start unless it sits for quite a while, but quickly dies again.

First thing to check is the fuel filter, if it does not have an external filter then it has a filter at the end of the pickup tube in the fuel tank. Empty the tank and look to see if the filter screen at the end of the pickup tube is clear. If that is not it then you need to remove the carburetor and clean it.

Engin runs fine for about twenty minutes then quits. oil level is full


try and run it with a loose gas cap the vent could be clogged then check for spark when the engine dies or even better get a inline spark tester then you can see it when its dieing

I don't see how leaking transmission fluid would be connected to the engine overheating, unless the radiator blew up.
You'll need to figure out why it won't start to proceed.
Check for spark and fuel pressure, and of course compression.
Is the check engine light on ?

More likely to be your ignition coils. They heat up and expand this can cause an open circuit which will close up again when it has cooled down. Although, a bad charging system may cause this problem. Check the battery voltage with engine switched off ( approx 12 volts) and with the engine running (approx 14 volts) If you are getting 14 volts then your battery is dead, if you aren't, then your charging system has a fault.

I would start by doing a clean and inspect of the carburetor. Look for debris and water in the bowl. Inspect the float to ensure that you do not have fuel in float affecting its operation. Check for freedom of operation of the float and needle. Give it a thorough cleaning of all holes and passages. Be careful to put it together the way it came apart.

I'd be tempted to have fuel pressure checked, if at all possible, when it quits. If nothing else, carry a can of quickstart with you, and when it quits, remove air intake at throttle body inlet, and open throttle plate and give a good squirt of quick start, then try to start it. If it starts for a second or 2, then you know you have spark, but no fuel. I've seen fuel pumps work good while cool, and cut -out when it gets hot. Then sit and let pump cool off for 20 minutes or so, then pump up to pressure again and away we go, until it gets hot again. You might also find if you park in the shade, you'll get further, or even on a full tank. Another good idea would be to change fuel filter in case fuel pump is working too hard pushing fuel through a plugged filter, and causing low fuel pressure.

This actually happened to a friend of mine! I saw it! Mow about 20 feet, and had to stop, then 20 feet...well, you get the picture. It was his air filter! Stopped up pretty good. We blew it out and it worked fine.
