I have forgotten my password to my dell c521 computer, not the system password

As far as I know, there are a lot of tools and utilities that can be downloaded and used to recover, retrieve, reset windows password. However, I've tried a couple of these utilities through the years. The free software can help you, but you have to learn some computer skills and waste a lot time on learning. If you want to save more time, maybe Google third party password recovery tool or Google Window Password Seeker can help you.

I tried to install windows 7 on my HP Pavillion DV9, but it's not booting from CD-ROM, i tried using a USB CD-ROM, but it's still not booting. pls I need assistance.

Hi,

Try to check if the windows 7 disc that you are using is not just an upgrade disc. Make sure that it is a bootable disc. Try to use other bootable disc to test. Also make sure that the boot device priority is set CD/DVD drive.

Hope this helps.

How to boot my laptop into usb drive

You have not specified your operating system. However I will explain how to do it with windows 7. First you have to create a bootable flash drive. Do it as follows
Format USB flash drive to NTFS format(For Win XP only. Vista users can directly format the USB drive to NTFS format) In your Windows, go to Control panel -> system -> hardware -> Device manager.
Under the disk drives section, right click on the USB storage drive and select Properties.
device-properties.pngGo to the Policies tab, select optimize for performance. Click OK.
device-policy.pngOpen your Windows Explorer, you should see the USB storage drive in the inventory. Right click and select Format. Select NTFS from the drop down bar. Click Start.
format-ntfs.pngFor Windows XP,
Download MBRWizard. Extract the zipped files to your desktop.
Open a command prompt (Start -> Program -> Accessories -> Command Prompt).

cd Desktop/MBRWiz2.0/
MBRWiz /list
Record the USB flash drive disk number
mbrwiz-list.pngMake the USB drive active.

mbrwiz /disk=X /active=1
For Windows Vista,
On the Start menu, navigate to the command prompt entry. Right-click and select Run as administrator.
vista-command-prompt.pngType

diskpart
list disk
Record the disk number of your USB flash drive.
vista-diskpart.pngSelect the USB disk.

select disk X (X is the drive number of the USB flash drive)
List the current partition. Record the partition number.

list partition
Select the current partition and make it active.

select partition Y (Y is the partition number of the USB flash drive)
active
list-partition-vista.png Creating bootable USB flash driveDownload Windows 7 iso (32-bit) file to your desktop (The download link is no longer valid).
Download and install WinRAR.
Right-click on the Windows 7 iso file and select Extract files. Extract the files to a folder (you can name the folder any name you want, but for illustration purpose, I name it win-7) in your desktop.
extract-win-7.pngIn your command prompt, cd to the windows 7 folder.

cd Desktop/win-7 (Change the destination to the folder that you have extracted)
cd boot
bootsect /nt60 X: (X is the drive latter of your USB drive )
bootsect-success.pngNow, copy all the files from the Windows 7 folder to the USB flash drive.
Reboot the computer. Remember to change the first boot device to your USB drive in the BIOS.
You should be able to install Windows 7 from your USB flash drive now.

Wont let me boot windows xp off flash drive

Hi manbrand62,
I see that you are trying to boot to your Flash Drive for the installation of Windows XP, try steps below.
  • As soon as you start your computer keep on tapping F12 or F11 to boot to the Boot Menu, I'm just not sure if it's F12 or F11 on a dell but one of the 2 options will bring you to the Boot Menu page that is where you can select your USB flash drive to install windows from the USB.
  • Note: Installing from a Flash Drive will be different from using a CD, windows may restart during the installation and since you are going to be using a Flash Drive you will need to get to the BIOS screen once the system restarts then set it to default then save and exit saving settings.
  • This will restart the system and continue the installation process for Windows XP.
I hope that this will help you installing Windows XP using you Flash Drive on you machine.
Have a nice day,

mvincentc

Windows os is locked on my dell inspirano1501 and need unlock password

This solutionwill work if you have forgotten your Windows password. It will not work if youhave forgotten your boot password or hard drive password etc.

Read on if you want to use a USB flash drive. Scroll down if you would ratherburn a CD/DVD.

USB Flash Drive Method
You need to download a Windows passwordcracker, put it on a flash drive, and boot it outside of the Windowsenvironment. This solution will show you how to do that.

1. Download the Ophcrack Windows password cracker from here. For Windows7, click on the ophcrack Vista LiveCD.Ophcrack is one of the best free Windows password recovery tools available. It's fast and easy even for a first time Windows password cracker. Save file toDesktop.

2. Download Xboot 1.0.0.0 Beta 6 here. Savefile to Desktop. Unzip file and extract to Desktop.

3. Plug a USB flash drive into your PC and format it with a FAT32 filesystem. This can be done by opening "My Computer" and right clickingon the USB flash drive and selecting Format. Select FAT32 and click OK. (Note:this will erase all data on your flash drive.)

4. Open Xboot.exe. Select the Ophcrack ISO file you downloaded and drag it ontothe Xboot screen.

5. Click on "Create USB" found in the bottom right hand corner of theXboot window.

6. Select your USB drive and click OK. Wait for your USB flash drive to becreated.

7. Restart computer and press F10 or appropriate function key for your computerto enter the temporary boot menu. It may be F12 or F9 etc. Look at the firstscreen that appears when you turn on the computer and you will see which key topress. You also could enter the BIOS and change the boot order if you wouldprefer that method.

8. Select USB Flash Drivefrom the boot menu.

9. The Ophcrack LiveCD will now boot. Hit enter to select the Graphic Modeoption when it appears.

10. Ophcrack will automatically begin cracking your passwords. The longer andmore complicated the password is the longer it will take to crack. 99% ofpasswords are crackable. Any password over 14 characters cannot be cracked. This program found my 8 character password which contains letters and numbersin less than 10 minutes.

11. Write down your password when it's cracked. Remove the USB drive andrestart computer.

Good luck and thanks for using FixYa.

Burn a CD/DVD Method

2. Burn the Ophcrack LiveCD ISO file to a CD/DVD using the Windows 7Disk Image Burner or another burning program. For Windows 7 users, pleasefollow steps 2a and 2b. If you are using Vistaor XP you will need to use a CD/DVD burning program already installed ordownload and install a free program such as the one here.
2a. Right click on the ISO file and select "Open with" and thenselect Windows Disk Image Burner or another CD/DVD burning program.

4. Select CD/DVD from the boot menu.

5. The Ophcrack LiveCD will now boot. Hit enter to select the Graphic Modeoption when it appears.

6. Ophcrack will automatically begin cracking your passwords. The longer andmore complicated the password is the longer it will take to crack. 99% ofpasswords are crackable. This will walk through the steps to create a bootable USB flash drive for the purpose of installing a Vista or Windows 7 OS. These instructions assume that you have a computer with Windows Vista installed on it.
Required:
· USB Flash Drive (4GB+)
· Microsoft OS Disk (Vista / Windows 7)
· A computer running Vista / Windows 7
Step 1: Format the Drive
The steps here are to use the command line to format the disk properly using the diskpart utility. [Be warned: this will erase everything on your drive. Be careful.]
Plug in your USB Flash Drive
Open a command prompt as administrator (Right click on Start > All Programs > Accessories > Command Prompt and select “Run as administrator”
Find the drive number of your USB Drive by typing the following into the Command Prompt window:
diskpart
list disk
The number of your USB drive will listed. You’ll need this for the next step. I’ll assume that the USB flash drive is disk 1.

Format the drive by typing the next instructions into the same window. Replace the number “1” with the number of your disk below.
select disk 1
clean
create partition primary
select partition 1
active
format fs=NTFS
assign
exit
When that is done you’ll have a formatted USB flash drive ready to be made bootable.

Step 2: Make the Drive Bootable
Next we’ll use the bootsect utility that comes on the Vista or Windows 7 disk to make the flash drive bootable. In the same command window that you were using in Step 1:
Insert your Windows Vista / 7 DVD into your drive.
Change directory to the DVD’s boot directory where bootsect lives:
d:
cd d:\boot

Use bootsect to set the USB as a bootable NTFS drive prepared for a Vista/7 image. I’m assuming that your USB flash drive has been labeled disk G:\ by the computer:
bootsect /nt60 g:

You can now close the command prompt window, we’re done here.
Step 3: Copy the installation DVD to the USB drive
The easiest way is to use Windows explorer to copy all of the files on your DVD on to the formatted flash drive. After you’ve copied all of the files the disk you are ready to go.
Step 4: Set your BIOS to boot from USB
This is where you’re on your own since every computer is different. Most BIOS’s allow you to hit a key at boot and select a boot option.
I used these instructions to get my new Dell Mini 9 laptop loaded with Windows 7 (the PDC bits). HTH.
