Question about Philips Magnavox DVD/VCR Dual Player

1 Answer

Once powered on, it will come up on the screen a few moments then shut itself off. With or without a DVD or VHS in the unit. It just won't stay on or give any error codes. Nothing. I tried unplugging it a few minutes, twice then it stayed on a little longer but still shut itself off.

Sounds very much like a fault in the switchmode power supply, either due to several faulty components, including (but not limited to) electrolytic capacitors, and/or bad solder joints.

Unless you are tech. savvy with this sort of thing, your best bet would be to submit the unit to an authorised service centre, obtain a quote on the likely cost(s) of parts/labour involved, get a second opinion (as to what exactly is wrong and if it is fixable), then you can make a positive decision afterwards as to whether to go ahead and get this baby restored to full operational condition, or not. It is up to you.

Usually with intermittent/frequent shutdowns, the cause has almost always been the PSU. My experience has shown with this circuit, that the electrolytic caps are the most likely culprits (although it has been found that zener diodes can cause the same trouble, but only due to the caps failing - increasing the output voltage across them).

Electrolytics have a tendency to leak/split open, resulting in the above symptoms. Particularly bad if they are situated near ICs/transistors with heatsinks. They may or may not have compromised other components on the same voltage rail(s). All the caps in this circuit must be replaced TOGETHER at the same time (whenever repairing a PSU) to ensure reliability and no further issues later.

The simplest suggestion is to try different discs or use the RAM ones in your PC for the time being.

Old Sylvania Trusurround SRS TV 4 head VHS and DVD combo, shuts off seconds after being turned on. No picture, just a black screen for a few seconds then it turns off.

good luck with that one I would consider buying a new system before wasting money on an old unit that will fail again sooner than later .

My Samsung DVD/VHS recorder the DVD won't close after playing DVD

Never force it, just use the remote.
If it won't stay in, unplug the unit and wait a while.
I think we get viruses from the TV signal which might be temporary (hopefully).

When we turn the power on iit only stays on a few seconds then turns off with the cst.in light flashing.. what does this mean and what can we do to fix it?? tks

I had the same problem. We watched a DVD, and the unit worked fine. We went out for ice cream, came back, and decided to watch a VHS. Instead of taking the VHS, the CST.IN light flashed and the unit cut off after a few seconds. We didn't have a VHS in the unit at the time. After cutting the unit back on several times without success, I looked online for solutions. One person said to hit 'eject' 5 times in a row, but that didn't work for my unit. Someone else said there was a lever inside near the power button that ejected the VHS, so I checked that out next. I washed and dryed my hands well, and used my finger to jiggle the white lever. Then I saw that the tray that the VHS sits on wasn't all the way forward, so I gently pulled and pushed it. I'm not sure which of the two actions worked, but my light is now a steady green and my unit is working fine now. I am so glad because we've had this unit for almost 10 years now, and I really didn't want to have to buy a new one! Good luck!

I have 20MC4306. Recently when you turn it off it turns itself back on. Also when you turn it on shuts off after 2 seconds. Tried putting in a video vhs then press play and wait few seconds and hit...

Sometimes when the TV recives a brodcast signal for a new update to the mainframes firmware, it will have to turn itself on to install/recive the update and aslong as it is connected to a power source it can do this. hope this helped answer your question. Have a good day :)

I have an RCA DVD/VHS combo with TVG. The DVD

This is a work-around rather than a solution. We put an audio CD in the tray and after closing the tray the unit begins to play the music. After waiting a few seconds we open the tray and quickly substitute a DVD and it loads OK. We had also tried cleaning the player to no avail. The CD approach is a pain but it does allow us to play DVDs. Jim

My tv shuts off

I picked one up in the trash 2004 model 27MDTR20/17. I turn it on and it shuts off. I opened the back and pulled the DVD/VHS board out. I removed a metal cover on the VHS housing (three screws). There was a broken clear plastic rod and one of the gear stop plastic cords (on the left side) was ripped where it attached to the front metal bracket through a hole in the plastic tab. The plastic chord has a piece of white felt like material attached to it. I epoxied the plastic rod back and put a piece of tape over the broken plastic end of the cord. The tape was folded over the edge of the plastic and then wrapped back on itself. I trimmed the outline with a scissor and poked a new hole in the end where the original hole was under the tape. I attached the chord back to the metal bracket. The problem was still there, the power would go off after a few seconds and the VHS gear train would make a slight motion like it was getting stuck. I then removed the mounting screws on the VHS housing and lifted it off the board slightly (ther are 2 screws that need to be removed from the far side also). There is a small gear under the right side of the board that was not aligned with another gear. The alignment is between a pin on one gear and a hole on the other. After I aligned them I reassembled the unit. The power stays on now only if I leave a tape in it but the DVD and VHS seem to work. My problem now is that I can only select AUX and channel 2! On well thats my next battle. Good luck.

TV wont stay on

The vcr carriage was probably damaged ( broken gear or carriage gear, etc ), As for repairing it, it may not be worth it and chances are, you won't find a new carriage for the unit. I have, in the past, disarmed the VCR unit and at least the customer could watch the TV. Thats not possible in every set, but it seems to work in the majority of them. Good Luck

My Tv is turning off by itself

if all you want to do is disable the vcr portion turn the set on , install a blank vhs tape it has to be blank or the vcr will try to read it .and the tv and dvd should work fine. this is a timing problem in the vcr deck its not hard to fix but it is a pain.

Standby

If both decks have a disc or tape in it , the unit shut down because of a power supply glitch or a mechanical trouble shut down the system control system. One way to possibly get them out is unplug unit for a few hours or overnight even better. Before you plug back in press the eject button and hold it in while you plug it in. Dont let go untill the tape comes out. Now if it comes out then unplug the unit anf replug back in and wait a few secs. to let it reset and do its thing. then see if it will turn on and try to eject the disc. if this dosent work then its a power supply problem and its going to need serviceing unless you know your way aroundservo controls and power supplys . Remeber always unplug these units as they do have voltages on the primary side of the transformer that can bite ya. Good Luck
