CD/RW and DVD Rom have disappeared and will not register

I saw a post from Feb where someone else is going through the same issues I am. One day I was sitting pretty with a working DVD Rom and a CD/RW. The next day - nothing. It does not show up in the Boot sequence and it shows a yellow exclamation mark next to the devices in the Device Manager. The troubleshooting tab won't work and I am unable to have it read or find a newer driver.

Per your reply to this other individual, you stated you may have some sort of program patch? If so, is it brand specific? I am working on a Dell; XP environment; Sony CDRW; Hitachi DVD Rom. If you still have it and think it may work for me - I would love to get it from you. I am absolutely at my wits end. The yellow question mark generally indicates that the drivers are needed for the device. Right click on the device and choose uninstall, then reboot. The machine will find the drive and reinstall it automatically, then search for driver updates or patches. If for some reason the drivers were completely deleted from the system, follow the link bellow for Dell support to find the driver or any updated drivers or patches.

If it doesn't show up in the boot menu then you have a hardware problem.
Check the cables are connected properly to the mainboard and the drives. Disconnect one drive and see if you can see it in the boot order.
Do the drive lights come on/flash at all when you switch it on?

This model of computer does not have a blu-ray drive unless you got a third party upgrade. In this case, you will need to track down special drivers, which can best be done by whomever sold you the drive.

I removed vista and put an original licenced windows xp pro but the dvd does not work and it disappeared from the bios


Vista is proprietary, you need to go out and find the correct driver for that CD-RW/DVD-ROM for that Acer PC.

Cd drive is not opening


Hi,

Uninstall the driver from Device Mgr, then go to registry editor, browse to HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class\{4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
On the left hand side delete the Upper and Lower filter. Restart the PC and reinstall the driver. You may also create new user account if issue continues.

DELL laptop does not read blank DVDs


the combo drive you listed above is a cd-rw/ DVD-ROM....meaning that it will play and burn cd, cd-r, and cd-rw disks. the dvd rom will only be able to play dvd-rom and dvd-r disks providing they are in the proper format. check that the disk in question is not a dvd-rw or (+2) disk. the drive will not recognize that a disk is in the drive if the disk isnt compatable. try a dvd movie, if that works then a dvd-r, if that works then try a dvd-rw +1. if the last option doesnt work then you will have to stick with the dvd-rom and dvd-r, or purchase a dvd-rw drive to install.

Have you searched Microsoft.com for a solution to your disappearing optical drive? First (from my own experience only) see if there is an ERROR CODE (i.e. code 39 or 41, etc) in your Windows XP Device Manager.... For this code #, open (double-click) Properties in Device Mgr. If not already, you'll find info online about removing upper- and lower filters from your Registry. BUT (good news!) Microsoft.com does have an Automated Repair for this maneuver which is ultra-easy----simply download the Fix, follow its simple wizard, and restart Windows. Hope it works as quickly and flawlessly for you as it did for me (also on a Dell running XP at the time).

Might be stupid Q, but was there a readable disk in the dvd drive already ?
It sounds like a software issues. What OS are you running ?

CD driver disappear after running Windows update


hi there

first read the updates that windows downloads before installing it to your computer. do a custom install. there might be an issue with one of the windows update with your dvd. its a good thing that you have system restore.
