The 4gb cards are a newer type of SD card called SDHC (Secure Digital High Capacity). Most of the S700 production was before SDHC cards hit the market. Later production S700's had been internally tweaked to accept the SDHC cards. 2gb is the largest you can go on your S700's, but beware, some of the 2gb cards are SDHC also, now.

SDHC memory cards are relatively new, and are sadly compatible with only the newest model cameras. For your model camera, recommend a maximum 2GB standard SD card. Fortunately, these days a 2GB card is very inexpensive.
