Question about Rinnai RHFE-1004FA 38,400 BTU Energy Saver Ductless Heater - LP Gas

1 Answer

Hi, I have a Rinnai 417 Convection heater. It runs for about a couple of minutes and then switches off. The filters are clean and I have thoughly cleaned the 2 ignition ports inside the heater. I have tried everything except having *** with my wife and abusing my mother-Inlaw (Maybe I should try that) and have come to a dead end. Any suggestions as to what the problem may be. Does this model have a pilot light and if so, could that be the problem? Kind regards, Peter

Hi , Yes I checked all the connections, wiring and the sensor. Still no luck. I assume that the sensor is the one in the middle of the unit under the front cover and the other 2 at each end of the unit, are ignition ports.
    ind regards,
    Peter

How can I clean inside a rinnai convector 417 gas heater

Beside cleaning the filters with a vacuum, There are no instructions on how to clean the inside of the heater. The back and front panels would need to be removed. Unless you are confident to remove the panels, just blow it out as you ahve done and make sure the filters are clean.

How do I clean inside my rinnai convector 417?

The owner's manual at http://rinnai.co.nz/tradesmart/upload/files/productfile/portable_convector_rce417_operation_and_installation.pdf on page 10 says to vacuum both filters weekly. It also warns not to wait for the filter lamp to come on since overheating may occur.

I have a Convector 417 RC-417-80 that starts fine but after about 5 minutes stops working. Any ideas?

Steve, there are a several of basic things that can cause this problem.

1. Air filter is clogged. Turn electrical part of unit OFF, Remove and Clean Filter, if necessary.

2. Air intake obstruction. Look for air intake obstruction around the front of the heater.

3. If your unit is a flue-less heater, Oxygen Depletion Sensor (ODS) may be partially clogged with
dust, link or pet air. Clean Pilot Assembly using canned compressed air with a straw nozzle (like
you clean your computer with).

4. Gas pressure fluctuation to the heater. This will require a service call from an authorized Rinnai
Service Technician,

Hope this helped you to troubleshoot and solve the problem.

Rinnai energy saver 1001ft try to on unit power on light shows, fan starts, times out,fan on again then shuts down. no flame indicator showing. problem? regards peter

There are a couple of things that can cause ignition problems:

The exterior direct vent termination may be clogged.
The gas line shutoff is not turned ON or is only partially open.
The filter needs cleaning. Be sure to turn the Master ON/OFF Switch to OFF before removing the filter. Leave it Off until the filter is cleaned and replaced.

All the above problems you can troubleshoot and solve yourself. The ones below, require an authorized Rinnai Service Technician to solve.

Spark ignition failure.
Faulty solenoids.
Faulty Flame Rod.

Hope this helped you to troubleshoot and solve the problem.

Evening, Rinnai Convector 417 - the two flames on the right hand side panel are on - heater tries to light but switches off before igniting we have cleaned the filters - seems to be no spark

There are about 8 reasons why this is happening. Rater than going into each and every one, I have included a link to an Owners Manual, that under the Troubleshooting Sections (pages 12 & 13) it will provide you with the scenario and how to solve the problem. This manual may not be the exact same one as your heater, but they all work the same and have the same problems.

Hope this helps you to further troubleshoot and solve the problem.

Heater starts and runs for several minutes and then turns off

Since the unit runs for a couple minutes, I would first check for proper water flow. Find the pressure switch. It is usually round with two wire terminals and a copper/metal tube attached to it. With the wires attached, use a jumper wire to bypass the switch. If it runs longer check for flow problems.. (WARNING don't jump the switch for too long!!! Just enough time to see if the run cycle improves). Clean all the skimmers baskets, pump basket, backwash the filter (if a cartridge filter clean the filters). Try firing the heater again. If it still shuts down, replace the pressure switch. I never recommend adjusting it. Adjusting it too low can damage your heater and/or cause injury.

The 417 service manual is dated 2003, so they're no more than 7 years old.  You can download the operation & service manuals here:

Rinnai convector 516TR

Hi This is happening to us and I called Rinnai... they suggested that if anyone either in our apartment or an ajoining one has painted walls or varnished a floor that the convection heater picks up the smell and the only way to get rid of it is to burn it off by running the heater for several hours in a well ventalated room...

I am going to try it tomorrow.

will let you know
