If you get "System Software Missing" then the only chance you have is if you could get hold of a ".rgn" (service firmare) file for your device.

First of all, here is the main ONLINE SUPPORT page for your model:

https://buy.garmin.com/shop/shop.do?pID=30926&ra=true

And here is a direct link to the ONLINE USER'S MANUAL for that model:

http://www8.garmin.com/manuals/Dakota10_OwnersManual.pdf

To view the Support Page or the Owner's Manual with Operating Instructions just use your mouse to click on the link, which is the underlined and highlighted text just above. This will open a new web browser page automatically for you and allow you to view the information at the website indicated or the contents of the Owner's Manual.

You may need ADOBE READER installed on your computer to read PDF documents. You can download this free at WWW.ADOBE.COM if necessary. Click on the DOWNLOAD ADOBE READER button on right side of the ADOBE home page when you get there, and then just follow the onscreen instructions to install it.

First try the following process to restore your unit:

Power off the unit.
HOLD down the power button and you will see "Pre Boot Mode" appear on the lower part of the display.
KEEP HOLDING the power button down and the display will flicker, keep holding until the pre boot mode message disappears.
This seems to take a long time (60 seconds at least).
Once the pre boot mode message disappears, release the power button and your device will perform some activites to recover from the above problem.

If that procedure does not workfor your unit, then try the process titled M3 - Recovery Process # 2, described in detail in the FAQ section at the following link:

http://garminoregon.wikispaces.com/Miscellaneous

Please comment back here to this page if you have any questions, have difficulty accessing the links, or just require further general assistance and I will respond as soon as I see it.

Thank you very much and good luck.

If you can't clear the error yourself, just return it to your place of purchase and they will exchange it for a new one.

    Good luck.

I power my nuvi 255w on and it says loading maps but doesnt and it makes a beep and powers off. there is no reset button on this unit and i don`t know what to do to get it to come on and stay on? ty

Hold the power button for more than 20 seconds till it restarts - this is a soft reset. Then try again.

If that doesn't help, do a master reset which clears all user data back to the factory state. From powered down, turn the Garmin on while holding the right bottom corner of the screen for at least 20 seconds. A question should appear if all user data should be cleared. Then try again.

When it works again I would suggest to update the software in there till the latest version available on Garmin.com

I have recently purchased the Garmin nuvi 765T and I have charged it and waited to use in the car but after a few seconds of turning it on, it turns itself off after showing the "Garmin" company...

Try to soft reset it by holding the power button for at least 20 seconds till it restarts.

If that doesn't help - try a master reset to factory defaults by holding the lower right corner during startup for at least 20 seconds. This will erase all user data and starts the Garmin in factory default.

If it restart I suggest updating the software to the latest version on Garmin.com

Anyone - I purchased 5 garmin nuvi 550s - fresh out of the box all require system updates before you can do a map update.... 4 of 5 no issue.... #5 failed during system update and now i get te error that...

If the unit will connect to your computer you can try copying all files from one GPS to the other. Just be sure not to copy over the *.UNL file. That contains the unlock information for that specific device. This may get the unit running. If you get the error can not unlock maps after doing this try updating the map again. If the above fails please call Garmin for assistance. 1.800.800.1020

First you have to set up an account at Garmin using the serial number on your GPS. Once you do that you can download firmware update for free.
After installing WebUpdater once from the Garmin website, perform all future software updates from your computer. Simply connect your compatible Garmin device to your computer, then run WebUpdater from your computer's "Start Menu" by selecting "Start", "Programs", "Garmin", and finally "WebUpdater"
REMEMBER: It takes hours to do a complete a map update.
Unless you bought the Lifetime maps you may have to pay for current maps.

NUVI 260 lethargic, navigation guidance and map take 15-20 minute

Normal 0 false false false MicrosoftInternetExplorer4 /* Style Definitions */ table.MsoNormalTable {mso-style-name:"Table Normal"; mso-tstyle-rowband-size:0; mso-tstyle-colband-size:0; mso-style-noshow:yes; mso-style-parent:""; mso-padding-alt:0in 5.4pt 0in 5.4pt; mso-para-margin:0in; mso-para-margin-bottom:.0001pt; mso-pagination:widow-orphan; font-size:10.0pt; font-family:"Times New Roman"; mso-ansi-language:#0400; mso-fareast-language:#0400; mso-bidi-language:#0400;} Good explanation you gave. More than most do.
Make sure you have the latest nuvi "Firmware"
then update the maps. I would start with making sure you have the latest WebUpdater on your computer before you proceed with any updates.

If a nuvi 200 is has an older version of system software glitches may occur. The device may be missing letters or have jumbled letters or displaying duplicate letters or strange symbols on the address screen. To correct this you will need to update the system software of your nuvi. You can easily do this by using Garmin’s WebUpdater program:
  1. Click the following link to download the WebUpdater program: http://www.garmin.com/products/webupdater/howtoinstall.jsp
  2. Follow the on screen prompts from the website
  3. Choose RUN/OPEN
  4. Follow the on screen prompts
After the program has been installed it should run automatically. If it does not please use the steps below.
To run WebUpdater:
  1. From the Start menu, click All Programs and find the Garmin folder
  2. Click WebUpdater
  3. Connect your nuvi to an available USB port on your computer
  4. To search for an available update, choose NEXT
  5. As the program automatically finds updates, choose NEXT to load the update. Once the update is complete, you can search for other updates such as voice languages, Bluetooth, and Traffic Receiver.
  6. Disconnect the unit to ensure it powers on.
Take your unit outdoors and keep it in a stationary position with an open sky view until it reacquires satellites.

Garmin Nuvi 265 W 'system software missing' message

The system bootloader software got scrambled when you did the update. You can escalate it to a software tech and they may be able to give you the bootloader image file. If not, you'll have to get an RMA and send it back for a unit swap.

Update problem with Garmin Nuvi 255w

I had same problem. I called Garmin customer service who connected me to a computer rep. Garmin hooks with your computer that you have your Garmin plugged into. They can upload the proper software in no time at all.
The rep told me that after I updated my Garmin I might have turned off the unit before it completed updating the new software. You need to wait until the screen with "Where to?" appears.
It works great now. Prepare to wait on hold for a while. I waited just over an hour on Monday, their busiest day.
