It didn't read the controller, it sounds like it is working correctly, did the lights flash on the controller, if not, it may be a bad controller.

Tips for a great answer:
You may have a corrupt
system file. With the system off, press and hold the power button on the
front of the unit until it beeps three times. Take your finger off the
power button and press and hold it again until it beeps two times and
then three times in rapid succession. Connect your PS3 controller to the
unit via a USB cable and select option two on the menu that will come up.
If this doesn't solve the problem, call Sony at 800-345-SONY for more help and they will walk you through more steps.
