Question about LG Dryers

Open Question

I have a lg dryer dle5977w that will not rotate the drum unless you turn it by hand and then close the door and hit start. Is this the motor or capacitor, or something else?

SOURCE: LG Dryer cracked drum on

Thanks for the solution. I figured out how to remove the drum the other day. Since this is a ongoing problem with the drum i figured a new one is going to fail someday so i took my cracked drum to a weld shop and had them tack weld in a few locations (inside and outside) and fix the crack at the seam. My cost was $30. I installed it and it seems to be working great.

SOURCE: Thumping sound from loose drum

Your problem sounds like drum rollers have flat spots on them or in need of lubrication.
If you have a front loading machine, Unplug the dryer, remove the front of the dryer. This will expose the drum and belt, remove the drum and belt and this will expose the drum rollers.
Check your rollers for flat spots, if they have flat spots on them replace them.
If they don't then they probably only need lubrication. Lubricate the shaft of the roller with a good grade of machine oil such as 3 in One oil. Reassemble the dryer, plug back in. This should solve you noise problem.
Good Luck,
I hope this helps

SOURCE: LG DLE5977W electric dryer hums when attempting to restart

This is usually the motor but not always. Remove the belt. Check for obstructions in the blower fan housing. Manually rotate the shaft of the motor.
If the motor is very stiff, or impossible to rotate manually, and the blower fan housing is clear, you need to replace the motor. If the motor rotates freely, run the motor momentarily with the belt removed and the blower in place. If the motor runs fine with the belt removed, there may be a problem with the idler pulley or the clothes drum. Try to rotate the drum by hand. If it is very difficult to move, correct any problem with the rollers, pulley, rear bearing, then reassemble the dryer and try it again. If the motor hums but doesn't rotate on its own even with the belt removed--yet you can turn it freely by hand--you usually need to replace the motor or the motor start capacitor. If the drum will not rotate then the drive belt is broken and should be replaced

Oscillator is not rotating

make this test and fix it. God bless you
Belt

Dryers have a drive belt that turns the clothes drum. If the belt breaks, the drum stops rotating. Then you need to replace the belt , and often the idler pulley, because the pulley tends to wear out at the same time. . If you hear the motor running but it does not tumble it is most likely the belt.

Motor

If the dryer motor only hums when you press the Start button, the motor may be burned out.

Remove the belt.

Check for obstructions in the blower fan housing.

Manually rotate the shaft of the motor. If the motor is very stiff, or impossible to rotate manually, and the blower fan housing is clear, you need to replace the motor

If the motor rotates freely, run the motor momentarily with the belt removed and the blower in place. If the motor runs fine with the belt removed, there may be a problem with the idler pulley or the clothes drum. Try to rotate the drum by hand. If it is very difficult to move, correct any problem with the rollers or pulley, and then reassemble the dryer and try it again.

If the motor hums but doesn't rotate on its own even with the belt removed--yet you can turn it freely by hand--you usually need to replace the motor or the motor start capacitor. Check our videos on testing a motor and capacitor.

Door switch

Your dryer can't operate at all if the door switch is defective. It's inside the dryer main housing near the door frame. Sometimes you need to raise or open the top or front of the dryer to reach the switch. Check for continuity. When Door is open no continuity when closed you should have a reading. If it's defective, you need to replace it.

Model # 72852 Burning smell Drum does not turn but a humming noise When door is closed it hums without the start button being pushed.

f you hear the motor humming and not starting at all it most likely has a severe friction problem with the drum or motor. It could possibly have some type of garment jamming the blower wheel preventing the motor from starting too.

Open the dryer door and manually rotate the dryer drum counter clockwise (CCW). It should take very little effort to rotate the drum. If it's hard to rotate that could explain why the motor hums instead of starting up. If it turns freely, shut the door and see if will start. If it still hums and not start it may have bad motor or a low voltage supply to the motor.

Dryer won't start

Try 2 things to see what has happened.

1st listen for a click from the door switch just as the door opens or closes. (No click = no start)

2nd reach in and rotate the drum by hand just a little bit making sure you hear the motor also turn. Then try to restart the dryer.

If rotating the drum enabled you to start the dryer the motor switch is sticking.

I have a LG dryer dle5977w and it has started making a rattling noise it is coming from the bottom left side by the lint fan does any one out there have a idea of what it might be

May be a small sock or dryer sheet caught in the blower wheel.
Remove filter and use a flashlight to see down the filter housing. You may be able to see item.
Rotate the drum each way by hand to help see item.
Remove with hooked wire hanger.

You may need a service call to remove object.

Our Maytag gas dryer drum doesn't turn. Replaced belt. Heats up but drum isn't turning

There are three possible reasons why the drum doesn't turn.
  1. Broken belt. You replaced the so in this case it's not.
  2. Door switch. The dryer will not operate if teh door switch is defective. It is inside the drier main housing near the door frame. You need to raise or open the top or front of the dryer to reach the switch. Replace if defective.
  3. Motor. If the motor hums when the start button is pressed, the motor maybe burned-out. Check the dryer motor:
  • Check the blower fan housing for obstruction and manually turn the motor shaft.
  • If the motor is very stiff or cannot be turned manually, you need to replace the motor.
  • If the motor rotate freely, run the motor without the belt. If it runs fine, there maybe problem with the idler pulley or the clothes drum.
  • Rotate the drum by hand. If it is difficult to rotate it, correct any problem with the rollers or pulley. Reassemble the dryer and try it again.
  • If the motor hums but does not run on it's own even without the belt, but can be turned freely by hand, you need to replace the motor start capacitor or the motor itself.
