Yes, reread the directions travel needs to be set for both up and down, and MUCH MORE IMPORTANTLY the safety settings must be set. This allows the door to close on a foot and not cause damage....VERY IMPORTANT to set correctly....

What does the purple button light flashing on 1/2 horsepower craftsman garage door opener

I think the adjustment mode is on.

For example, that's from Craftsman manual:

""
Setting the Force
The force setting button is located on the left panel of the motor unit. The force setting measures the amount of force required to open and close the door.
1. Locate the purple button on the left panel of the motor unit (Figure 1).
2. Push the purple button twice to enter the opener into Force Adjustment Mode (Figure 2). The LED (Indicator Light) will flash quickly.
3. Push the remote control or control console (Figure 3). The door will travel to the DOWN (close) position.

""

Actually, you should just read carefully your garage door opener unit's manual.

How do i set the travel limits on my craftsman garage door opener 139.53919

  • Open the garage dooricon1.png fully by pressing the wall control button. The bottom section of the door should be right at the header in the "full open" position. If it is too far back, the door cable can become misaligned. If it is not back far enough, you may not be able to get your vehicle in and out of the garage.

Position a stepladder behind the garage door openericon1.png motor. Locate the limit adjusting screws on the left side of the motor housing. Have a friend stand by the wall control button.

Insert a screwdriver into the slot for the "up limit" adjustment screw. Turn it to the right to decrease the door travelicon1.png and turn it to the left to increase it. Turn the screw in small increments.

  • 4

Close the garage door by having your helper push the wall control button. Notice the seal between the door and the floor--there should not be any light coming through. Adjust the "down limit" screw in the same way if necessary.

  • 5

Operate the door by the pressing the wall button and check your adjustments.

Replaced worn gear now door will only travel a few inches and reverse

Make sure you put the black cup back on the end of the motor shaft and that it is pressed all the way on. Make sure the RPM sensor is plugged in. If neither of these are the issue, then you probably did not have the motor shaft pushed all the way back when you tightened the coupler after replacing the worm gear. Loosen that coupler up and from the front of the motor (opposite end in which the coupler is on) push the shaft back as far as it will go. Hold it there while you tighten the coupler back up and then try it.

You need to remove the cover of the motor unit and check the drive gear. It sounds like it is stripped. Your explanation is a little confusing though. You say it moves all the way back to the cover protection bolt and then you say it won't open.

Sears garage door... when you close it it hits bottom and opens again may repeat 5 times...nothing blocking eye

All garage doors nowadays have a load-sensitive device, so that, for example, if a child gets in the way, it senses the resistance and goes back up. If the garage door travel is not set correctly, it will continue to try to lower even though it has hit bottom, creating resistance which sends it back up. Check the owner's manual to see how to adjust the travel of the door. It is usually very straightforward.

Fixing a craftsman half horsepower garage door opener

If the main light on the motor unit flashes 10 times and the door reverses to the open position it is a door sensor problem. Check to make sure they are pointed at one another. Each of them has a small light that should be lit and not flickering when they are aligned correctly.

    CRAFTMAN 1/2 HP OPENER

You say it only opens two feet?? Then closes?? If I may if you a little bit more costly option. Dont replace the gears. They used to be really good 8 years ago but the way they make the gears now there too soft and often strip out much faster. I would suggest that you do what we call a motor head change out. Take off your old chain drive motor head and buy a new one. Pretty simple. Two things though one always make sure you put the new one in with the door down. And the traveler in the down position ( The traveler is the metal thing hooked up to the chain) but far and your gear that you have it sounds to me that you dont have the gears close enough.. but 100 percent on that but a door should never close on it own. It's not safe.

Can you adjust the down-travel? On mine, it's a white nylon screw, on the left side, inside the light cover. Seems like there were instructions for this adjustment in the instructions for the gear replacement.
