My fan has quit working. Will this cause the computer to start up then shut off after about 30 seconds?

Absolutely. The fan is used to cool the hardware components inside the computer. One of the main hardware components is the Processor. A Processor operates at a certain operating temperature. (Thermal Limit) If this temperature is exceeded the Processor turns off. This is a built-in fail safe feature designed to keep the Processor from burning up. It is suggested the fan be replaced. Yes, it is a protection thing. If it can't sense the fan it will send an error and turn system off before overheat. You can go to "device manager and click on box next to "system devices" and see if your fan is in there and if there is a warning. If it will stay on long enough.

It very well could cause that type of behavior as it is most likely reaching too high a temp and shutting down to protect it's self. A fan replacement is recommended.

This is generally a hardware issue - if the computer is under warranty get it fixed through Acer. If not you may need professional help. You don't mention how old the laptop is but if it is older than a year or two and you live in a dusty environment it could be overheating. If the fan is not running or always running on super-high then it is probably overheating.

Another thing to try is using a boot CD (any boot CD will work) and see if the computer still shuts down after that 30 seconds. If yes, definitely hardware. If not, possible that it's a windows issue.

Hope that helps!

Your ventilation fan may be clogged and causing the computer to overheat.
Try a can of compressed air "AIR DUSTER" and a vacuum cleaner to clean the fan.
If this is not the problem, you may need to repair the windows installation

Fan won't shut off w/remote.

Does the remote have a dedicated button for off/on lights, and then off/on fan?

I assume it used to work,,???

First, regardless, replace the batteries in the remote, even if they are new.

This will do two things, reset the remote and double check the remote is powerful enough to send a strong signal.

Do you have the original set up manual for the fan?

If this is not a new install, and it simply quit, get out the manual and perform the original setup.

Sometimes there are "modes" setup on the fan by how long the wall power switch is on or off, say on for 30 seconds puts it in test mode, or on/off in less than 30 seconds puts it in operational mode.

Not knowing what you have, I cannot say that you need either a new fan or new remote, I need more information about the entire situation.

The laptop doesnt start up. cooling fan is brocken. thermal oil is old and almost dry and little

Sometimes depending on the version of BIOS there is a thermal shut down feature,If the CPU gets to hot it will shut the entire system down. What you can do is replace the CPU fan and apply more grease in between the heat sink and the CPU chip.If this does not solve your problem then you may have damaged the CPU.the best way to fix this is to replace the motherboard and CPU.Try replacing the fan first because if your computer has the thermal shut down feature then chances are that it protected the motherboard and CPU from any damage.Try the simple things first! GOOD LUCK.
