Question about Dell Ac Adapter 0CM161 for Dell Inspiron 5150 5160 Dell XPS PA13

2 Answers

When i use my laptop, sometimes just leaving it alone or during a game the power switch to the battery. i checked that the power wire is connected but the led indicator on the wire is off. The only method i have to regain the power is to unplug every part of the adapter and reconnect. I'm using windows 7 home premium. Is this a problem of the adapter?

I had this same problem very recently. It is the adapter. I do not know of a way to fix this problem except to buy a new one. Adapters are very cheap and i purchased a new one for mine on Ebay for only $5. Many of them come with a warranty too.

Something is tripping the adapter protection circuit. Try plugging it into a surge protector or surge protected outlet. If it is still tripping you need a new power adapter. A PA13 is $10 on Ebay. Check the bottom of your laptop to see the power specs (90 watts or 65 watts).

How to connect a power converter in ur minivan and what kind I need for laptop and video game (Nintendo) I mean watts

You need to find the total watts for both the Nintendo and laptop if you are going to use both at the same time. Wattage is sometimes listed on the model/serial tag on the units. Just add them together and find a converter with slightly more wattage output. If the wattage isn't excessive, you may be able to find a converter big enough that just plugs into the cigarette lighter and doesn't require direct wiring. If you want to direct wire one, you will need to hook it to the + and - of the battery system. Keep in mind it will drain your battery if you leave it on and the vehicle isn't running. You may want to find an installer that knows how to install a relay system on the ignition switch that will kill the converter when the switch is turned off.

Yea im not getting power in the 2,3,4,5,6 position in the underdash fuse box and im also getting no power in the 2 relays witch i think or in the hi beam and low beam place in the engine car not getting...

The only power in the inertia switch is when the fuel pump wire has power-and only when the pump is demanded to run-during the initial pressurizing of fuel lines (for about 2 seconds) when key is turned to ON, during cranking, and during running of the engine.
Power to the fuse block will come from the power distribution box-the fuse/relay block-under the hood. Check all your maxi fuses. One of them will supply power to the fuses, or if not them, then there will be a fusible link just off the battery that distributes power to various circuits, including the fuse box. But first check the maxi fuses. Same for the relays: the power feed for them will also be a power distributor- a maxi fuse or fusible link.
If a wiring diagram would help you, register for free at autozone.com, listing make, model, year, and engine size. Car specific wiring diagrams and repair procedures are then available to you. Look under repair guides, may have to look around for wiring diagrams, sometimes under chassis electrical,
sometimes a stand alone entry, but it's there. Also a component location guide-it may show where or what those two relays are. The wiring diagram may show, should show, how power gets directed to the fuse box. Good luck.

No power at all

A couple of things to check and a couple of questions to help me (or somebody else help you further)

No power. Is this using both battery and mains to power?
Is there an LED light on the ac adaptor and if so is it steady or flashing?

If there is a flashing LED light, it means that the power is not completing the circuit to the laptop
(internal fault with laptop, may be a blown mainboard fuse)

If the charger light is steady, then power is getting to the laptop. Check the security of the DC jack port where it enters the laptop, of wobbly or loose, this will need replacing. Some are soldered onto the board, others are held in place by a clip and connect to the board via a wire, worth checking the wire to motherboard connections as these can fail.

If the jack port is firm and you are getting power to the laptop from the charger, test, with a multimeter set to DV volts (19 volts) by touching the red terminal to the inner of the adaptor jack and the black terminal to the outer of the jack. Low voltage readings indicate the charger is not outputting the right voltage

Remove battery and test using mains alone
Remove mains and test using battery alone

If the battery was known to be charged and will not power up the laptop, the fault is more serious than just a blown fuse. If the steps above fail to solve the problem, you will need to take the laptop to a repair shop for testing of the motherboard.

If this advice did not help PLEASE do not leave any feedback "thumbs".

Suddenly the power doesn't come on. We've checked batteries and made sure all wires are connected but it still won't come on. It's like it's "burned out". What should I do?

My power supply for my Presario V6000 died due to broken wires. The battery powered the computer until it died. Now, the new adapter will not power the computer.

This is a common eevnt the battery get so flat that the adapter will not charge it quickly.. You need to leave it totally alone for at least 8 - 12 hours... To see if the adapter actually works and PC is good, take OUT the battery, and plug IN the PSU, the PC will work, sans battery just on PSU. If OK, then charge up as related. It will do it after a ling time.. Sometimes batteries go so flat they are ruined, sa a new one may have to be gotten IF it does NOT charge up.

My battery won't re charge when connected to A/C

You must check to see if the Ac adapter is actually putting out voltage, check where it goes into the plug, the wire sometimes fractures here, and wiggling it makes it go, on & off.. OR It may be the connection on the internal socket, they fracture the solder on the mother board itself. It takes a time to recharge at least overnight 8 hours left totally alone and no use..

Seems to be powering off battery when plugged in

This will happen if the battery is flat, or near so, try replacing battery, connect up the power adapter, and leave alone for say over night, this should charge the battery. If it doesn't then you have to check, both the charger, and the battery, and replacement is the only real way unfortunately.

My inspiron 6000's power flickers on and off intermittently, switching between A/C & battery power. I've replaced the power cord. Any other ideas?

Try removing batt and use ac adapter alone. Check if laptop works fine also check if LED flickers still.

Try removing ac adapter and use battery alone and check if batt flickers as well.

If flickering only happens when both are connected or vice versa try this first. Update the BIOS for your laptop. Download the BIOS update from http;//support.dell.com

Thinkpad T21 won't start on battery alone. Works OK with adapter

The power comes into the plug on the back of the computer. This connects it to metal traces inside the mainboard of the computer. These will be connected to voltage regulators which often output 5 volts, 12 volts, 3.3 volts, and the CPU voltage; they sometimes look like the image at right. These will be connected to cylindrical capacitors distributed throughout the mainboard. Capacitors act like tiny, fast batteries, supplying extra power where needed to maintain a steady voltage during high demand.

Anywhere in your laptop, physical or electrical damage can cause a short circuit. A short circuit will consume all available power, causing your laptop to not turn on. If your power adapter LED comes on when you plug it into the wall, but then goes off when you plug in the laptop, you probably have a short circuit.
