LCD projector is truncating left side of image

Sony VPL-HS51 LCD Projector. I cannot find the interface cable for my camera, so I have no way of sending you an image that I know of.

When I project the opening Warner Brothers logo onto the screen from a DVD (I picked Ben Hur), the left side of the logo is five inches from the left side of the projected image, while the right side of the logo is about 22 inches from the right side of the projected image. The overall image width is about 66 inches, and while the logo is not perfectly symmetrical, it's like the left side is losing about 15 inches.

Another sign is when my Oppo Bluray is on the default screen, it says "pen" in the upper left corner when it should say "Open". There are some issues with both the horizontal and vertical adjustments in the projector; they do not function unless I lift the front of the lens up, then the rack and pinions engage and move the image on the screen.

  • Henry Winsor Apr 04, 2011

You misunderstand. I have no way of downloading a picture taken with my camera or with my phone to a computer so that I could upload it to the site. Photography is f minimal interest to me, I've never bothered to set up the technology so I can do anything with the photographs I have taken. It's on my list to do as soon as I have time, but the vacation photos are from last May.

I have just checked the h and v shift on my projector and they are at 0, as is my vertical keystone.

  • Henry Winsor Apr 04, 2011

Then this is on hold until I have time to track down the necessary items and get you a picture.

  • Henry Winsor Apr 04, 2011

Why will it be open forever anyway?

  • Henry Winsor Apr 04, 2011

I've uploaded 3 pictures. The first is actually the last, loaded in reverse order. Note the truncated text on the bottom one, and the very off-center message and logo on the first two. I do not know whether the FBI message is useful, I think they show up somewhere but are not necessarily centered.

  • Henry Winsor Apr 04, 2011

That is shadow. The projector is back against the wall, I cannot shoot from behind it. The problem is on the left side of the image, not the right.

  • Henry Winsor Apr 04, 2011

I have already tried changing the horizontal shift and vertical shift on the projector menu, it does not change the situation. The only thing that has mattered is changing the picture using the external controls and they are adjusted to the extreme left at present.

  • Henry Winsor Apr 08, 2011

Sorry, I haven't had much time this week. When I adjust the picture using the external controls, all I do is move the complete image as it appears on screen, I do not expose any more of the image. The picture is not being cut off by the external controls of the projector.

This issue seems to have dropped from my previous expert's attention. I think everything you might need is here, as he asked me to do everything possible except check to see if the power cord is plugged in.

    Dear Drew,

My projector is not connected to a laptop; I currently have the cable box coming in via the component input while I have a bluray player using the HDMI input. My projector supposedly supports 720p, although it seems fixed at 1080i and I have never been able to find any way to change that setting. Frankly, 1080i is a pretty darn good picture, even if all of it doesn't appear on the screen. The problem is evident with both sources, so I'm pretty sure the problem is the projector

In any event, I will go back tonight and see whether the vertical and horizontal positioning will affect the picture. The only other adjustment I have without going into the service menu (which I have no idea how to do) is a vertical keystone and I have set up the projector in a position that no keystone adjustment should be required. The last time I tried moving the h pos and v pos I noticed no affect on the screen, but maybe that is indicative of not moving them enough or that maybe they are too far to the left to make visible any movement or even that there is some problem in their workings.

In the past week, I have recalled more of the history of the problem. I did not have any problem with the projector originally (I purchased it at least 6 years ago), but this problem seems to have come after changing the bulb first time, which was about 4 years ago (which should tell you how much TV I watch). It is more of a nuisance than a problem, but I do miss being able to watch poker and see both of the players' hole cards. If the h pos doesn't do anything, I may go ahead and reinstall the bulb and see whether there is anything in the install that is causing the problem.

Let us worry about rating when we are done, as right now I don't think you'd like my rating. Do you have access to the instructions for accessing the service menu for a Sony VPL-HS50 if it becomes necessary? I may not be able to get back to you until Thursday.

  • Henry Winsor Apr 12, 2011

    Dear Drew,

You are being incredibly helpful. I will take advantage of what you have provided, but in order of increasing complexity. If my problem stems from a h pos value pinned too far to the left, well, I'm an even bigger idiot than even I think sometimes.

Will let you know what happens, most likely by Thursday.

    Thanks again,

    Henry

There should be settings in the projector itself for the top and bottom half of the image. They are settings to widen or shorten the width of the image from both the bottom and top.

Also, you can try to lower the resolution of the display setting of the laptop
let say 800x600 or 1027x768 and hope it helps!

Thank you and please rate! :)

    Try this:

Under the user menu (click MENU key on remote), check that Setup/Status is
turned ON. If not, turn it ON.

Exit the user menu by clicking the MENU key.

To enter the Service Menu, on the remote quickly click ENTER, ENTER, UP,
DOWN, ENTER. When prompted to enter SERVICE MODE click UP for Yes. To return to
User mode click the same sequence then when prompted to return to USER MODE
    click UP for Yes.

To enter the Factory Menu, on the remote quickly click ENTER, ENTER, LEFT,
ENTER. When prompted to enter the FACTORY MODE click UP for Yes. To return to
User mode click the same sequence then when prompted to return to USER MODE
    click UP for Yes.

Also, I'd like to add. I've seen bulbs installed slightly crooked that have caused this kind of behavior. Another option, considering the length of time the bulb was installed, it is possible to have been dropped or bummped in 4 years. This would also point to the possibility of a crooked bulb in the bulb housing.

Thank you, best of luck again.

Sounds like H-position, V-position issue. You do not need to connect your camera to it Just take a picture of the screen with your camera and attach it to your comment so that I can confirm thats the issue and suggest the adjustment procedure

I can wait for the photo. I have to see it to determine what the problem could be depending on how much of image is truncated. Sounds like focus block issue but we should be absolutely sure before changing the service menu settings thats why. May be you can purchase the cable on e-bay or something

I also see black smudge on the lower right corner. Is that a shadow or is it part of the problem?

Ok did you try changing the aspect ratio settings? Also increase the right shift value so that the picture will move a bit to the right.

By external controls you mean the buttons on the projecotr? If so then try shifting the image to the right. The picture is cutting off on the left hand side because it was pushed to extreme left

Uncentered image using projector

reset the settings to factory default. is it cut off evenly, or is it uneven and shadowed? if it is the latter and you have a dlp projector, you have a collapsed light tunnel. if it is cut off evenly, go into the settings and make sure the resolution and screen size matches.

Problem with truncated image from data projector

You will need to setup the displays from the computer running the projector.

Setup the projector as being a second monitor pretty much and make the adjustments from that in display properties on your computer, or your video card may have it's own control panel for this as well.

Hope it helps =)
