Luckily you have a mower which can always be serviced. Look up John Deere in the phone book. Call them and they can come get it and fix it for you.

Either you have a missing/broken/misalinged deck belt or a frozen bearing. A mechanical boyfriend can fix the first issue with enough time, beer, and a few basic tools but the bearing is going to require a more in depth treatment.

Just purchased a toro zero turn mower at garage sale. Ran very well first couple weeks. I was running it the other day, shut it down, jumped back on 10 mins later, mower does not start.

You'll need to check all the safety switches. Probably one in the seat, one for the mower engaged, one for clutch/parking brake engaged, possibly one for reverse gear selected, and possibly for position of the steering arms.

Engine runs, but when I engage the electric PTO why does it go dead?

Newer mowers have a safety interlock that prevents the mower running when going in reverse. My guess is that the reverse switch is on and when the PTO is activated the engine dies like you shut off the key.
Second idea is that the device the PTO drives is frozen up. Test this by trying to see if it turns with the engine off. When you engage the PTO the engine chokes down because it can't turn the PTO.

When running the mower, it shuts off immediately when trying to engage blades(pto)

Hi Digger:
I've two possibles come to mind for you to check.
1) Engine OFF - Make sure that all of the blades and pulleys can turn freely.
2) Engine OFF - Double check belt routing. Move engage lever ON/Off and look at what movement happens. It may be that the belt is on the wrong side af a mounting flange and binds when engaged.
Cheerfuls.

I have a JD 160 mower that shuts off when you turn on the pto switch for the blades, I have checked the charge in the battery and it is good, it will start to turn the blade and then the engine dies, just...

Most likely cause is the seat safety switch is not functioning properly, ie. when sitting in it to allow blades to engage, if failed it will act like there is no one on the mower and the blades get engaged it will kill the engine, like having the ignition shut off.

I hope this is helpful to you.

When I engage the front PTO the engine dies.

There is somthing in the PTO that is binding up. I am assuming the PTO is for the mower blades. The belt(s) could be binding up, not on the pulleys, etc. The blades should turn by hand easily.

Try putting a jumper wire on the wire going from the engine to the seat. Take that plug and put a wire from one side to the other. Be careful not to cut your feet off when engaging deck.
