It sounds like the keyboard might need replacing but you could try removing it it altogether and re-fit it as the ribbon cable plug-in sometimes go off.
a cheap repair is to remove the keyboard and buy a cheap usb one

Hi, Michelle.
Need a little more info...was this a "free" anti-virus program offering to scan pc/laptop free? for viruses? You didn't give any personal info out to it, did you?
Can you get to "safe mode"? If so, in safe mode go to control panel; add/remove programs;uninstall this program...if it won't let you, try doing a restore to a previous date prior to when you started getting this.
There is a "anti-virus" program that acts like a virus to get you to buy their removal tool.

My ACER 5100-4720 boots up with a black screen and after about 15 minutes it loads Windows Vista, but it is very sluggish, then it acts like it gets up to speed and still runs sluggish. I have 1GB DDR2,...

The first thing I would check is that the cpu fan is working. You should be able to see the fan come on from the bottom of the laptop. Sometimes the fans can stick from dust and dirt. Then the cpu will get very hot and cause the computer to slow way down. Try using a can of compressed air on the fan and see if it starts working. If the fan is working ok then you might have some type of virus or corrupted installation causing the computer to slow way down. You could try pressing F8 right before windows starts to load. This will bring up a boot menu. Then try booting the computer in safe mode with networking and see if it boots up fairly quickly. Once it boots up in safe mode run your virus scanning software to see if there are any viruses on your computer.

Try to boot in safe mode. Press F8 constantly till you get a screen with many options. Select Safe Mode. It may take some time to boot. Scan for viruses. If no viruses found insert windows cd and select "upgrade". (NO New Installation).

I have an acer aspire 5100 and I get nothing on the screen apart from NTLR is missing Press any key to restart. I have tried using the back up disc made but it wont recognise it.

Your boot.ini file is deleted. You probably did this accidentally or you were hit by a virus that does this.

You can boot using any wndows xp cd and when prompted in the status bar at the bottom press the appropriate F key to enter a repair console. Once you see the command window, type HELP
You want to locate the command that is something like fixmbr or fixboot scroll down until you are at the end of the help commands display and then type that command. It will find your windows installation and ask you to confirm it. It will then write a new boot.ini file and you can then turn off the PC, eject the CD and boot normally. After this, run a full virus scan or go to kapersky.com and run their online scanner.

Advise me of any clarification you need or questions you have before rating this and when successful, then rate this as Fixed.

Thanks,
Worldvet
