Question about Pentair Pool & Spa

Open Question

I want to know how to disassemble a Tagelus TA 50 sand filter from the existing plumbing connections. The existing sand filter tank has burst open and I plan to buy a new filter and valve assy and install it myself if I can get a little more info on the how to do parts.

SOURCE: How to change sand in Hayward S-200 Sand filter

hayward S-180 filter takes 150lbs, S-210 takes 200lbs not familur with the S-200. To change sand you have to remove the vari flow valve on top. You can either unplumb the filter and roll it over on its side and try washing the sand out or try scooping it out upright. Whatever you do dont damage the laterals on the bottom of the filter. When refilling with sand you want to make sure all the laterals are undamaged and in the down position. I always fill the filter half full of water to keep the sand from damaging the laterals while re-filling the filter with sand. Make sure you use pool filter sand and not play sand!

SOURCE: The threads are stripped on the drain plug of my

If it is a plug, just make sure that it has the o-ring. SPX1022CZ2 is part number for the hayward o-ring on a PLUG.
If its a cap there is a gasket that seals it on the inside S180G is the part number.
If you have a cap or plug and the treads are stripped you options are limited.
You can try teflon tape, three or four wraps counter clockwise mighthelp, but if not silicon sealant is you last option before tank replacement.
Permatex blue RTV (found in PEP boys, Auto Zone) works well in these applications.
Apply the Permatex inside the cap or on the threads of the plug liberally. Allow the Permatex to get tacky and then thread on the cap or plug. Apply additional Permatex around the cap/plug.
Wait 24hrs untill fully dry. It should be sealed. After this point consider the cap non-existent, unless you are prepared to repeat the process.

SOURCE: onga sand filter pumps sand in to pool

The lateral(s) are damaged and allowing sand thru and back to the pool. I have never dealt with that specific brand to know if the laterals come as one assembly or individual pieces. You'll need to contact the dealer you got the unit from or check online at for someone in your area.

SOURCE: no suction from hayward variflow pro series sand filter

Try these tips. I am guessing that one of these is the reason that your pool filter is not working properly. If you try these suggestions and they don't work, let me know and I will trouble shoot with you again.
1. Check skimmer and pump strainer baskets for debris.
2. Check for restrictions in intake and discharge lines.
3. Check for air leak in intake line (indicated by bubbles returning to pool.
4. Backwash your filter.
5. Be sure Vari-Flo valve is set on “Filter” position.

I have sand coming out of the bottom of the davey tagelus 230 sand filter and in the pool. is this repairable with a service or should after over 25 years look at a replacement?

25 years????

That is awesome, and you absolutely got your moneys worth.

Get a new one, but if budgets are slim, as with most of us, then you can repair your filter...

Get a new drain and lateral assembly. (that is what failed)/

You will need to know the size and or model of your filter.

You will need to remove the valve if top mount; shop vac all of the sand out then rinse tank.

Install the new lateral ass\'y then...

Add new filtration media (recommend glass over sand) and reassemble any plumbing removed to access internal of tank.

Good Luck

I'm getting a little sand in the discharge during back wash

that is usually caused by damage to the fingers (laterals) on the standpipe. most times this damage comes from improper winterization or when sand is changed by non professional

Change sand in tagelus filter

So you have a "TA" filter. Which size?
It does not matter really, otherwise I would have been able to know how much sand you you have to remove and how much to put back in.
Anyway, To change sand you have to remove the MultiPort Dial valve on top.
Then, you can either unplumb the filter and roll it over on its side and using a garden hose, start washing the sand out or use a shop vac, with keeping it upright.
Whatever you do NOT damage the laterals on the bottom of the filter. When refilling with sand you want to make sure all the laterals are undamaged and in the down position. Always fill the filter half full of water, at least over the laterals by a few inches, to keep the sand from damaging the laterals while re-filling the filter with sand. Make sure you use pool filter sand and not play sand! And... cover the stand pipe!!! Use duct tape or some kind of covering (spout cut off a water bottle then covering the pipe). Otherwise you will get sand into the standpipe and into the laterals, then you have another problem.

Davey tagelus 230 high rate sandfilter how do i change the sand

Once you have removed the plumbing connections and the top selector plate you can then unscrew the top from the main filter body, This is not easy and you will have to use a 5 lb hammer (lumpy) and a block of wood as the top has been siliconed to the body and made a tight fit. Be very careful with the hammering and make sure you only put the wood against a solid part of the top near a plumbing joint before applying the hammer to the end of the wood. There are about 6 complete turns before the top part is unscrewed. The threads will need to be cleaned and the old silicone removed and clean the sealing gasket "o" ring before putting back. My model did not have an "fingers" at the bottom of the central stalk. I believe the filter should be filled 2/3 with the proper filter sand grade 16/30
Hope this helps

How to change sand in a s244s sand filter

Unhook the plumbing from the multiport valve, hopefully you have unions, it would make it easier. Take off the multiport valve on top by removing the bracket, usually held on by two phillips held screws that go into corresponding nuts. After bracket is removed, carefully wiggle the valve straight up, Don't wiggle it side to side, the PVC shaft in the is like Schedule 20 and breaks really easily. After valve is off do not try and pull the shaft up, there is too much sand waying it down and you will break it. Remove the sand with a cup or pop bottle cut in half or whatever. It is a pain to keep scooping it out with the shaft in your way, but I emphasize the strongly, do not try to move the shaft out of you way or pull it out without getting enough sand out of there. The other way to get the sand out, a little easier, is use a shop vac. You have to do it slow and kinda jiggle the hose while sucking sand because it'll clog the hose up. Get all the sand out, pull the shaft and lateral assembly out. The newer laterals fold up kinda like an umbrella so you can remove it, the older ones you have to unscrew each later individually to remove it. Inspect the shaft and laterals thoroughly to make sure none of them are cracked or not seating properly. Spray everything off, reinstall the lateral assembly, center it in the filter as best you can, most of them don't lock into anything, they just kinda sit there. Put duck tape or something over the top of the shaft so no sand gets in it. Pour about 50lbs. of sand in, (usually 1 bag), and recheck the shaft to make sure it is centered. An S244 requires 300 lbs. but just double check the label on your filter. Pour it all in, take the duct tape off of the top of the shaft, slide the valve back on, lubricate the gasket on it first, retighten the valve via the bracket you took off. Hook the plumbing back up and you are good to go. Backwash it right off the bat for a couple minutes before putting it on filter. You can potentially blow dust into the pool if you don't

Instructions on placement of the lateral assmebly w/center pegs

That placement is automatic based on the center pipe resting on the bottom of the filter tank and the valve being fully seated into the opening on top of the filter and clamped into possition. You likely have damaged laterals and need to replace that assembly in order to fix the sand issue. When refilling the tank with sand, be sure to fill it nearly half way with water before adding the sand.
