I have the boot sequence list. There's 4 items on the list but I can't figure out how to change the sequence.

  • artlutherie Apr 03, 2011

I just figured it out. I've got cd first, hard disk for 2, IBA on 3 and diskette drive on 4

Does this sound OK? And should I only check mark cd and hard disk c: ?

OK, Here's what you need to do. Shut down the computer. When you restart it, as it boots, continue to press and release the F2 key as the computer starts up. When it does, you will get a BIOS setup screen. From there, there will be an option to change boot sequence. Make CD drive first and then C: drive. Save your changes and then reboot. This time, the computer should load your reinstall disk. Let me know how it goes.

You have to use your arrow keys and the enter key when you're in the BIOS. You highlight what you want to get to by using the arrow keys and select by hitting enter. There is usually a menu at the very bottom of the screen that tells you what keys will do what. Try that. It's hard without looking at it but if you're still having trouble let me know and I'll go into my bios and see what the actual keys are to do it.

I have no problem highlighting and unchecking items but I can't change the order.

If I un check all but the cd rom will it do what we want it to do?

  • Julie Endres Apr 03, 2011

OK, on mine if I use the arrow keys to highlight the CD rom drive, F5 moves it up in priority, and F6 moves it down. I found this out by looking at the box at the very bottom of the screen that tells what each key does. Let me know if it works. If not, I'll look for info on the Dell website. I didn't have any checkboxes on mine.

I'm not sure if my reply went through so I'll try again.

I have cd set on 1 and drive c: set for 2. Should I check mark IBA and diskette drive?

You have to change the boot order by going into "Setup" (BIOS) and changing it so that the CD ROM drive is before the Hard Disk Drive in the boot order. Usually it's pretty easy to find in Dell (Pheonix) BIOS..

Something they have started doing in PCs built in the last 7 or 8 years is put a recovery partition on the Hard Disk itself. It can reatore the PC to factory settings in about 20 minutes (sure beats the 2+ hours it typically takes)

follow the directions here:

I Need to reboot and i dont know how to

There are two ways. the best way is to click "start" then select "restart" (same as reboot).

this is a soft reboot because you never really power down the computer. You can also hold the power button in for a few seconds and it will turn the computer off. if it doesn't restart by itself momentarily press the power button once more.

My dell computer won't reboot. How do I reboot it from a cd?

If you are running Windows XP, open the DVD tray (if you could), then load the Win XP installer.

Restart the computer, and it will tell you to press any key if you would like to boot from CD.

Just hit any key and your computer should reboot using the CD.

Thank you and good luck!

CD's won't burn right!

Try reinstalling the drivers for your CD bay.

Either the CD that came with the bay, or find them online ....

Right-Clickie your My Computer and find the name of your CD Bay in the list on the Hardware page ... delete it, or right-clickie and uninstall the driver.

Reboot the computer and it should re-detect the drive, or find the drivers you copied earlier.

If that doesn't solve the problem, then it might be the type of CDs that you are using. Have you changed brands lately??

Compaq c310 laptop to be booted

To boot from the disc, you need to restart your computer. As soon you see the HP logo screen keep on tapping F12. You should select the option CD/DVD drive or CD drive. Make it sure that your XP cd is inserted.

Please be reminded that if you will reinstall your windows XP everything will be wiped out from your computer, your documents, picture and any other documents.

You may follow up the instruction using the link below.

Keep me posted.
