stevdan,

take the screws off the bottom cover. there is a small lever pointing toward the front of camera with a black screw on it. gently move it to the left, this will release the lock lever. Now advance the lever and the shutter should fire. if not, it is not repairable. no parts

Others here have suggested the problem lays with the plastic gear on the advancing motor beside the mirror.

This might cost $100 or so...?

SOURCE: film won't advance

Pentax ME Super was one of my favorite camera, small and clean shutter release. But it has been about 25 years since it was manufactured. They happen to use rubber break within shutter unit and as any rubbers, it started to deteriorate and melt between the shutter-blades. This prevents the complete cycle of the shutter and jams the winding. You may be able to unjam the winding but eventually you have to overhaul the shutter unit. Overhaul charge is around $100 in US repair market. -James

Yes, as long as it's not a DX lens. DX lenses are designed for the smaller image area of some digital cameras and will cause vignetting (dark corners) on a 35mm camera. The vibration reduction feature of VR lenses won't work, but won't cause any problems.

DX lenses will fit and work, but as mentioned above, you will get dark corners.

Low battery showing replacing batteries does not solve problem

The flashing low battery symbol is the way Canon film cameras showed that the camera has had an error and has stopped functioning. It can have multiple causes - but for a quick check remove the lens, turn off the camera and then turn it back on - see if the symbol stops flashing. A problem with the lens can also cause this problem (usually a failure of the aperture unit)

The camera is stuck in the open position but will not operate. The battery is new. it shows a charge, but the shutter will not go, nor will the film advance.

Are you using the lens that came with the camera? If not do you have an original Olympus lens you can put on it and try? Some of the adapters/aftermarket lenses on the market are/were considerably less than awesome, some would even partially obstruct the mirror's movement. Others just had shotty firmware or components and would require more voltage to operate then the body could produce. If its not lens related, pull the battery and check the contacts in the door and at the bottom of the battery bay and make sure they aren't a)twisted/damaged, or b) too far depressed for the battery to make solid contact. After so many battery changes the contacts can get pressed too far down for the contacts to connect. Fixing it can be a bear and honestly, knowing if they are too far depressed can be just about as difficult. Not sure if this will help but its a place to start. Best of luck!

Most likely the shutter "curtain" (a few pieces looking like sheet metal just behind the mirror, designed to protect the camera CCD from dust and damage due to too much light) is not opening. This will require servicing by Olympus, since you will have to take the camera apart to be able to reach this camera part. Unfortunately, this may be a pretty expensive repair.

You are able to use your old OM lenses with a new Olympus digital SLR camera. You will need to purchase an MF-OM 1 lens adapter to be able to connect these lenses to the digital SLR camera. Also when using these lenses you will only be able to use the camera in manual focus mode as these lenses are not capable to shhot with an auto focus mode.

How to use a manual zoom lens with Evolt 510

By manual zoom lens I am assuming you mean a film camera lens. If it is one of our OM 1 or 2 lenses they can be used on our Olympus digital SLR camera but you will need to purchase an MF-OM1 converter to be able to adapt those lenses to fit on our digital SLR camera. Then you will only be able to shoot using those lens in manual focus mode. Auto focus mode will not be available.

Using the lens

As long as the lens mount is compatible with the Olympus e410, you can use this lens.

It will only be limited by what features are supported through the camera body - I suspect that you will have to do everything manually.

Good luck.
