Question about Dell DIMENSION 3000 CELERON 2.4GHZ CD-RW,80GB,256MB WINDOWS XP DESKTOP PC (074576101317)

1 Answer

Maybe you can help with this... I could only get online by doing a system restore. So I tried to fix the problem by uninstalling service pack 3 and installing the latest version. I did this successfully but it didn't seem to solve my problem and when I uninstalled SP3, I lost all my restore points so now I can't get online at all. So I decided to reinstall WindowsXP but when I try I get a window that says my existing version is newer than the version on the disc. It's the reinstallation cd from the manufacturer that I have. Do I have to get a different reinstallation cd in order to do a fresh install of Windows or is there some way that I can make the disc that I have work? I have Dell Dimension 8200 if that helps.

    It's a Dell Dimension 8200

  • artlutherie Apr 03, 2011

I have it on the bios page but I can only uncheck items on the list and not change the order.
Should I just uncheck all but the cd rom?

You will have to do a complete factory reinstall at this point. Hopefully you have your data saved so it won't be lost. The disk you have should work, but you'll have to boot from the CD drive. Insert the manufacturer's disk in your CD drive and then restart the computer. Hopefully it will automatically start the reinstallation. If it does, just follow the prompts to reinstall the operating system. If not, let me know and I'll talk you through how to tell your computer to boot from the CD drive first.

I just put the disc in and restarted the pc but all that i get after loging into windows is the desk top.

  • Julie Endres Apr 03, 2011

OK, we'll have to make some changes in your setup to allow the computer to check the CD drive first. Please tell me the make and model of your computer so I can figure out which function key will get us to the right place.

  • Julie Endres Apr 03, 2011

No, you don't want to do that. Give me a minute or two and I will go into my BIOS and see exactly how you change the order. I'll get right back to you.

  • artlutherie Apr 03, 2011

I have the CD Rom set and checked for the 1st on the list and C: drive set for number 2.

I Have IBA set for 3rd and Diskette Drive set for 4 but have neither of these checked. Do I want these check marked?

  • Julie Endres Apr 03, 2011

I think it would be fine to leave those checked. I'm not completely sure what the check marks signify. Make sure to save your changes and then try to reboot from your CD drive.

  • artlutherie Apr 03, 2011

I tried and nothing happened. Do I have to sighn into Windows after I restart the computer?

If I go to My Computer and click the CD I can get it to come up but when I choose Reinstall Windows XP it says it can't do setup because my version is newer. I think I already told you this but thought I would mention it just in case.
Are there any other settings that I might need to change on the screen that has the BIOs?

  • Julie Endres Apr 03, 2011

Are you using a Windows XP disk or the actual factory reinstall disk? Teh factory reinstall disks will actually reformat the drive and reinstall all the programs and the operating system. Maybe we could try system restore instead. Something seems strange about this whole thing.

  • artlutherie Apr 03, 2011

I got it now. I'll keep you posted. How does payment work?

  • artlutherie Apr 03, 2011

OK , three options to choose from:
    1. Set up Windows
    2.Repair Windows installation
    3. Quit set up
    What should I choose?

  • artlutherie Apr 03, 2011

I chose to set up windows. Now I have to choose the partition type.

Do you know anything about partitions?

  • Julie Endres Apr 03, 2011

You need to put your operating system on the main or primary partition.

  • artlutherie Apr 03, 2011

OK, the reinstallation is complete. I guess my next step is to enable firewall and get an internet connection so that I can start running Windows Updates?
Also, you've been very helpful and I would like to pay you for your help. How do I do this?

  • Julie Endres Apr 03, 2011

Just accept the solution and if you'd like, you could write a testimonial. Glad I could help!

  • Julie Endres Apr 03, 2011

I guess this wasn't a premiim question, sorry. I'm not sure there's a way to pay me through the free answers area but still glad to help.

Maybe its a Bad Update. try to Boot to Safemode first and Uninstall the Installed Service Pack 3
To get into the Windows XP Safe mode, as the computer is booting tap "F8 Key" Continuously which should bring up the "Windows Advanced Options Menu" as shown below. Use your arrow keys to move to "Safe Mode" and press your Enter key.
Then, uninstall Service Pack 3 Start>Control Panel>Add or Remove Programs then look for Service Pack 3 and Uninstall.
If it did not work try Using System restore.
Start>All Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.
Hope This Helps

After installing my ge web minicam pro, it uninstalls my cd-rom, downloading the cd-rom driver again does not fix it, is there a patch available for windows xp-pro,i have seen one for vista but not xp?

First try a system restore (click start/accessories/system tools/system restore) on restore options it should have the time and date that you installed your hardware (if not chose one prior to installation) it will say installed ge webcam chose that and complete restoration. After it restarts check to see if your cd rom working. If it is not reopen system restore and select undo my last restoration ( since the problem still exists with the undo at least you will have your webcam back).
This website should do the trick

Restore point cannot access

It sounds like you're SP3 installation is corrupt. Go to start > control panel > add/remove programs > uninstall SP3. See if you can do a restore point then. If so, re-install SP3.

Re: Play button on DSS AS-2300 Transcription player

several solutions you can try.. first of all, convert it to wave and try to play it (file. convert to wave)

if it is for all dss files, then the program may have to dll files that updated and will not work now

depending on operating system... windows xp media edition maybe the cause would be my first guess and there would be no fix for it...
2nd guess... service pack 3.... try to uninstall the program and reinstall it... and if you have service pack 3... go thru control panel and uninstall service pack 3 if you have it

Network connection lost since sp3

Go to Add/Remove Programs in the control panel.

Next find Service Pack 3 and select "Uninstall"

This will roll your PC back to XP SP2, if you had SP2 installed prior to installing SP3.
See this link from Microsoft:

Scroll down till you come to "uninstall info for windows service pack 3 release candidate'.
You may have to copy and paste the link into your browser.
If I could be of further assistance, let me know. If this helps or solves the issue, please rate it.
Thanks, Joe
