Question about Delta Grinders

1 Answer

I own a Delta 23 680 bench grinder. The mounting bolts came loose and went into the casing. I have taken the grinder apart so that I can pull off the caps on the ends to gain access to the bolts but I can't figure out how to remove the caps (end covers of motor where the drive shaft comes out)...I figure they are being held in by the bearings. How can I remove the caps in order to reset the bolts?

First mark the caps so that when you reassemble they will align properly, Next get a small screwdriver and GENTLY pry the cap apart. One end probably has a rotating switch with wires coming from it so be careful. When reassembling you can use a small piece of wood to tap the end bells back into place.

I have a Delta 6 bench grinder model #23-680. How do I hold the shaft from turning as I loosen the nut hold the grinding wheel in place?

Hold (or lock) the grinding wheel on the other side if loose or lock because the locking direction is the same direction and don,t forget to ringing (sound-check -like a tuning fork) the stone if you replace it with a new one The risk is small but safety first

as for slowing it down, no problem. Hook it to a cord with a dimmer switch connected to it. Make sure your running with the same power rating though. As for a dripper, no ideas just yet.

Bench grinder is firmly anchored, but still has a terrible vibration, unless I pull forward on the motor. What can I do?

I would take a look at the wheels or wire brush before I went any further. Then I would remove both and just run the grinder to see if still vibrates. But usually one or both of the wheels are out of round.

Delta 23-880 bench grinder

You should be able to hold the grinding wheel with a pair of leather gloves on your hands and lossen the bolt. Look very carefully at the threads to make sure you are trying to lossen and not tighten. Some are left handed threads on bench grinders.

Bench Grinders Featues

A bench grinder is a very simple tool. The units are usually listed as 6-inch or 8-inch wheel models, and the 8-inch units are typically a bit more powerful, and subsequently more expensive. A 6-inch model will usually be powered by a 1/2 HP motor, where the 8-inch will be larger, likely 3/4 HP. Two very useful features to look for are a mounted work light, which will directly illuminate your work, and an adjustable rest, which functions much like the tool rest on a lathe. Strongly consider models which have both features. Many also include a clear, see-through spark guard, which will help keep any sparks from flying toward your face. A word of caution, though: such a guard does not replace safety goggles.
