Buy a lamp and sit on it. Meaning, you don't need to put it in until your old lamp goes. But, it will be handy to have it around for when it finally goes into the lamp graveyard.
Now, couple of things:
* If you don't notice a dimishing of brightness in your set, or your set's not doing the other things bad lamps do (like randomly shutting off your set), you can bypass the lamp reminder message on most Sony sets (I'll tell you how in a second).
* Even if you don't notice a loss of brightness, you most likely have lost a good amount of brightness and your eyes have grown accustomed to it.
How to bypass the Lamp Reminder message:
--------------------------------------------------------------
(works on some sets, not all)
OK, so you have got your new lamp, but you want to squeeze the life out of your old lamp as much as possible. Or, your repair guy came out and put a new bulb in and two days later that message pops up.
Pick up your handy Sony remote.
* Press Menu (or WEGA Gate, on some models)
* Navigate to the SETUP tab (usually by pressing the down arrow; it's usually the last option)
* Press Enter
* Use your down arrow to go to the last option on the screen, and then keep going.
* Find the option that says "Lamp Replacement"
* Press Enter
* Press Yes
Done.
What we've done is reset the Lamp Timer. You will want to not forget that you did this, because you will forget that you are going to need a new lamp. So, buy the lamp first before you procastinate.
And, when you install the new lamp, wash, rinse and repeat.
since it has worked 1200 hours or even more since u have been resetting the counter! just change the lamp, resetting the counter does not make the lamp work or not work , it is only a reminder for the user to change the bulb when it should be & that u have some balance hours left to procure a new lamp! if the brightness is adequate, then it is a ballast problem & not lamp problem! buy a new lamp as u will anyway need to , fit it & it may solve ur problems permanently!
Joann, If you buy an original Sony lamp (and I would recommend you do) you will get the lamp with the housing and the allen wrench you need to change the bulb. You shouldn't need a ballast.The reasons to stick with an orginal Sony lamp: 1)You get the lamp with the housing. Some of the aftermarkets just send the lamp and reflector 2) the originals have far less problems than the aftermarkets. I have seen replacements fail early and not be bright enough. If you have any further questions, feel free to ask. If you are happy with this solution, please rate it. Thanks!
If the lamp light is flashing, yes you need a new lamp. Be sure to buy an original Sony lamp as the replacement lamps are garbage and are not worth the discount. Please rate this solution. Thanks!
Have you contacted Toshiba? They will sell you a new fan. It is possible the power supply has a problem. Bulbs usually have a 90 day warranty. Contact where you bought the bulb. Prices are dropping rapidly for new projectors. Yoiu can buy a new oen for under 500.00.
