Question about Sony VAIO RB30C (VGCRB30) PC Desktop

1 Answer

When I turn off the cpu with the windows shut down or sleep or power button it will only return when you toggle the power to the psu on and off, When you push the power button to restart or start up the green light on the psu goes off and you can only start it b y cutting power to the psu then restoring it (see video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0LmltrJacP8) the original psu was replaced with a bestac equivalent. I a have tried removing the power button and bridging the pins but I got the same results

As you may already know, your computer will shut down after power on if if the power supply does not receive a power good signal from the motherboard. Since you already tested the PSU in another computer, and you know the PSU is good, either you have a bad mobo or some device connected to the power supply is draining excessive power from the PSU and causing it to shut down.

Try removing the 4 pin pin power plugs from ALL devices, such as the floppy drive, CD drives etc.
If the system stays on when you power up, then you can isolate the faulty device by re-connecting them one-by-one. If the system still shuts down your Mobo or CPU is bad and you might want to take it to a PC technician to determine if it's worth fixing.

Hi,

There are two harware you should check,

First the memory, it might be malfunctioning, if you have an extra memry card, try to swap it just to test the syatem.

Second will be the power supply unit or PSU, that is already overheating and shutting itself down, thus its not powering the your hard disk. try to replace it if you have an extra PSU.

Those are the most probable problem you have, PSU is the main problem in any desktop that was always been overlooked!

Hope that helps you out!

When i shut down my pc it shuts down, but the psu stays on, i can turn it off by the button but not by the desktop, any ideas???

Hi, "Sleep" mode or "standby" mode allows your computer to go on standby or sleep until you "wake" it up again. This is a power saving feature which is usually used for a few hours. You can change it to completely shut down everything (including power supply) in power supply options in your control panel. Check out your help section for sleep or standby options. Hank

Sleep mode wakes up on it's own

turning off all the power saving items does not help this- it just ensures that it doesn't automatically power down your hard drive or shut off power to your monitor automatically when you aren't using it.
May I suggest Hibernation Mode as an alternative? this mode saves everything you are doing to disc and shuts your computer down completely. when you turn it back on, it will restore what you were last doing onto the screen, so you can pick up where you left off.
you can find more information on this and sleep mode from here: http://windowshelp.microsoft.com/Windows/en-US/Help/335c6a5d-0304-4af1-b135-6bf6c124dc111033.mspx#EZAAC

Emachine t5026 not power on. replaced psu.

I would test the memory. Also I think some computers will shut down if the fan on top of the CPU quits working. Or maybe one of the other fans or the Hard Drive quit and is drawing too much juice causing the PSU to shut down. It sounds like something may be grounding.

Asus a8v-vm se fans always run

Hi jderek4, try this. locate the toggle switch on the back of the power supply. Just find it do not flip it.
Plug the PSU's power cord into the PC. Just as you got a good connection & the PC begains to power up move the toggle switch to it's other position. The PC should power off that very second.
If the PC does not shut off than the PSU is bad. If it did shut down wait a few seconds. Press the cases power on button. The PC should start to boot up. Let it finish loading. Click the start button & choose to shut down windows. The PC should shut off.
Yes? If not than your back to (bad power supply). Swap it out.

Hi - first check that all the fans are rotating - the set will shut down if they are not.
***** WARNING potentially FATAL voltages (up to 400V DC) exist on the PSU boards - if you don't know exactly what you are doing don't ! *******
Unfortunatly the fault could be on a) PSU b) CPU board, as this monitors the PSU voltages and will shut down the set if the measured voltages are wrong c) plasma drive circuits - if these are drawing excessive current, or someother fault exists the fault feedback signal to the CPU board will activate and the set will again shut off.
Check the PSU voltages, the standby power must be OK otherwise the set wouldn't work at all !. The +5V switches on first followed by the +70V and +170V (about 1-2 secs delay.)

If the 70 and 170 dont come up try removing (with the power DISCONNECTED) the two large double row connectors on the PSU board near the 70/170 V test points - these supply the plasma drive circuits - the set will still switch off as there is a fault feedback line from the drivers, but it should stay on long enough to check the voltages.
